I very recently purchased a 1D mark lll to use for bird photography and would like to downsize and sell one of my two full frame bodies. I mainly use a full frame for family events, portraits car shows and model shoots. The cameras I have to choose from are a 1Ds Mark ll with about 5500 shutter actuations that I bought last year and a 5D classic that I used for all my previous full frame photography. I like the 1Ds construction but prefer the 5D controls. What would you do?

Heya,

A good 1D3 goes for $1kish on KEH.com and a 5Dc goes for around $580ish.

The 1D3 has APS-H, which has a crop factor of 1.3. The 5Dc does not have a crop factor.

That might help weigh your decision.

The 1D3 is great for action. But if you're just doing portraits and car/model shoots, I don't see much reason to keep the 1D3. It all comes down to what you're most comfortable shooting. Construction doesn't mean much if you're not throwing it in the dirt and water. Obviously your 5Dc has held up this long.

Very best,

Just to clarify, you have a 1DS2 or 3? Title is different to the text in your post.

I just bought the 1D Mark lll . I will keep it (for photographing birds, wildlife and auto racing) and sell either my 1Ds Mark 2 or 5D classic. I have tried to correct the title to the thread too. Sorry for the confusion I had typed it on my phone and missed the error.

I had and loved the 5dc but given a choice I would keep the 1ds2 for build, focus, fps and resolution. None of these things are bad on the 5d, but they are all better on the 1ds2, ymmv

I'd like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread. As jaomul pointed out, I'm trying to decide if I should keep my 1Ds Markll or 5D classic. I'm leaning toward the 1D but have yet to take any images with it where it's shown itself to be as good as I think it should be. I've only taken a few shots in controlled lighting situations similar to the ones where the 5D excelled. Maybe I need to take some additional test shots.
