Damn, it's sharper at f/4 in the corners than the 17 TS-E is at f/8. Honestly, that sounds a little too good to be true, but I'd love to find out that it's true when my copy arrives next week.

Me too, although I doubt I'll be shooting much at f4 anyway.

I agree with pinkfish that the TS-E 17mm corners are not 'perfect'. It definitely does get softer towards the edges, even with no shift at f4-f8, so it could certainly be sharper at the same apertures. However, even with shift the sharpness doesn't drop of substantially until you get to full shift. I usually use some shift and stop it down to f11 to get it more evenly sharp. But then sharpness was also only my second reason, behind shift to get the TS-E.

I'm just stoked that is very evenly sharp across the frame at f8. If it were super-sharp and then deteriorated rapidly for even just the last 10%, that would be more of an annoyance for me. Once a lens gets to 'sharp enough' I don't really care after that, I usually have other issues such as DOF, wind etc..

Also, even if it is sharper than the TS-E 17mm, it won't replace my TS-E use. Of coursed there is also the TS-E 24mm if you want really, really sharp.

Mine's arriving on Friday so we'll see how it goes in comparison to the 17-40. It'll be interesting to see how the 17-40 goes in terms of price now. Has one of the cheapest L lenses just got cheaper? It certainly won't be going up in price.

I'm so keen for this lens...

But the sensible side of my brain says that the 17-40 is really good enough and I shouldn't waste $800 on a very minor upgrade...

Guess which side will win.. :-)

More like a $650 upgrade, at least for the moment, and the 17-40 is good enough for, what? Shooting no faster than f/11? Cropping from 17 to 20mm? As for whether it is a minor upgrade...

PMI/Profeel website still shows them in stock.

My lens has arrived just two hours south of my house at a UPS facility. It says expected delivery Tuesday, but I am being hopeful it makes it here tomorrow. Unless they hold it in Columbus until tomorrow night before a truck gets on it's way!

I hope you're wrong. Wrong that it is only a "very minor upgrade." I imagine you're hoping the same. :)

Any UWA zoom that can actually be used on the wide end without stopping down to dust-spot-showing apertures is more than a "minor upgrade" over the 17-40L. At least the copies I tried.

Granted, for those who don't need the IS (which I imagine is many for this type of lens), the extra few hundred on the price tag is a bummer.

$800 upgrade if you live in New Zealand!

It should be sharper, lower ca Qnd flare etc.

But most of my shots with the 17-40 are things like seascapes. I know that the new lens will be better, and I will almost certainly buy it.

But I doubt any clients will notice.

i wouldn't be interested in this if it didn't have the IS. Looking forward to capturing a lot of interesting blurred motion pics at weddings.

At last!! An iPhone pic from the bus stop, sorry if it's huge I haven't attached photos here before so am not sure how it will show on the screen.

Digidirect Sydney didn't have it in store, except (I think) for pre-order clients, so I went around the corner to Georges where they had unpacked 30 of this lens today. What was left of that 30 were stacked behind the counter and it looked as if they'd been going fast.. someone else was buying his too as I was paying.

Anyway I'm thrilled!! Unfortunately it's dark by 5pm in Sydney at this time of year and I have to work all week, so there won't be much chance to play with it in daylight until Saturday.

My gear is soooo far ahead of my skills that it's not funny. But I'm happy :D

Good luck with all your orders and unboxing!!
