I'm curious to see what has been improved in the new 16-35. I hope for less distortion, better sharpness edge-edge, and I will strongly considering selling my 17-40 for it. Not in any rush, so will patiently wait for reviews and tests comparing the 2 lenses. Curious how it performs against the 16-35 II as well. Would this new lens suggest Canon to maybe introduce 14-24 sometime in the near future? IS basically makes this on par with the 16-35 2.8 in terms of usefulness in low light, although IS is not a replacement for larger aperture, but you get my point.

i am amazed at $1199. If I had typed out a response instead of deleting it, I would be apologizing for being a jerk and eating my hat.

I still want to see actual MTF measurements instead of Canons theoretical graphs. If the corners are sharp, this will be a contender.

Price is out 1199 for the 16-35 and 299 for the 10-18. Actually not bad assuming they are good lenses.

Ok this is good. I'm listening now. Can't wait to see reviews. I can see one of the two being a Xmas gift

And when was I comparing them to launch price taking into account inflation? They cost double the price now. I don't care what I could buy a lens for in the 80's, I wasn't into photography in the 80's. I care about what I can buy a lens for now. And right now (well, last year when they were launched), I could buy either the old version for x, or the new IS version for 2x. And this applies to pretty much every new IS version Canon has released. And that is why people think it will apply to this one too.

It's not Canon's fault if yours or anyone else's train of thought is completely based outside of reality. Canon discontinued the lenses they replaced, again, totally normal practice for any business, people will buy the new product or source the old one used, take a guess what most people are going to do ;)

Like I said... the evidence for why their prices are the way they are is all there, it's not their fault if the general public has unrealistic expectations for pricing. I give it 2 years max before the price of this lens is down to $999 (after the initial R&D costs are covered).

who wants to venture a guess on the prices of these bad boys?

mine are $1200 for the 16-35f4ISL, and $900 for the 10-18IS

an f4 with like 3-4 stops of IS would be better than an f2.8 without IS for hand holding :)

wow great guess!

well i got one right...but boy was i dead wrong on the 10-18mm...i'm assuming it won't compare to the 10-22mm, right? i mean at that price if it's as good as the 10-22mm, why would anyone buy the 10-22mm? there's no way people are paying double for the slightly faster, slightly longer lens

Likely will be discontinued. They have the 6d for people in what was the price point of the 10-22mm. They can use the new 16-35.

one of canon's finest pieces of optical glass being discontinued? Say it isn't so!

has AND EF-s glass been discontinued?

Perhaps not as Canon kept the 17-40 going together with the 16-35.

The new 10-18 is still EF-S and I think it's a good move by Canon. The barrier to entry has been lowered for croppers wanting to experiment with ultra wide shots.

I'd expect the IQ of the 10-18 to equal that of the 18-55 lenses and this be a step below the 10-22 which isn't going anywhere. So the 10-18 is to the 18-55 as the 10-22 is to the 17-55. Plenty of room for all.
