I'd been trying out my Canon Powershot SX50 HS IN 16:9 format instead of 3:2
In LR5 I didn't notice (or see for that matter) that a lot of the frame had been removed until I opened them in DPP 3.14.15.0 where the full image is displayed as a thumbnail but with a white box around but in the edit window it reverts to the cropped view that LR displays.

My question is this recoverable i.e. can I set something in either the DPP or LR software to get me some of the loss back or even recompose / choose what gets lost?

I rather suspect not and have gone back to 3:2 on the Powershot.

Funny I didn't know what I was actually missing until DPP showed me

I'm not familiar with the camera.

In Lightroom what do you see? If all the camera does is put the format in the Exif, Lightroom could show the whole shot without the frame, but what are you seeing? Can you show a LR screen shot?

Well, like I said, I don't have the camera!

But the Lightroom shots do show a crop has been applied, so I suppose the camera puts the pixel dimensions in the Exif and Lightroom picks it up?

One thing you can try is to go into the Develop module and open the Crop tool (press "r") and see if it shows the whole pic with the crop applied!

Adobe has a free app that cancels the crop. I'll try to find a link.

Interesting. I just did a test on my Canon G2 shooting RAW, one shot at 16:9 and another at 1:1.

LR saw both photos at the original aspect ratios (16:9 and 1:1, respectively)...and if I took the 1:1 shot and tried to recrop to 16:9, it did so only within the pixels of the 1:1 shot.

Did you convert the Raw file to DNG before running the plugin?
