First of all, please excuse my ignorance. There is an insurmountable amount of threads here that I am sure I can piece together to find answers, but I'm still open to any help that is offered!

A few years ago I practiced photography with a 30D and a kit lens. I kind of veered away from photography for a while, but I miss it terribly and would like to dive back in head first. I'm looking to get all new equipment. I'm willing to buy used at first, and then dish out a few grand after I feel I've earned it, haha.

I'm looking for advice on what to start with/work towards. I am looking to pick back up some work for a few music blogs, so if anyone has any recommendations on camera/lens combinations, that would be great. I have usually shot arena concerts, but I'd be using it at smaller shows as well, so something that will be versatile in these lighting conditions.

I'm also going to start doing some head shots. I mean, I do live in NYC, so there is no shortage of clientele!

I also want to start doing some fashion/modeling photos and publicity photos for artists and musicians.

Any recommended accessories to accompany as well? Lighting, etc.

Possibly some video shooting...

I realize this is a broad spectrum, but any help is appreciated :)

My overall budget after I really get things rolling would be about $5,000 or so.

Like I said, I'm ok with buying used at first before I really dish out.

Thanks everyone!
Brandon

I suggest you slow down a bit and master one form of photography before moving onto others. Shooting live venues is much different than shooting head shots. Focus on one of these, master it and then move on. Better to be great at one thing than mediocre at a bunch of things.

Gear will depend on what you want to shoot with live performances needing totally different types of gear than studio head shots

I mean I'm familiar with both territories. I've done a good bit of concert photography. Some of the photos are in my flikr link. I'm comfortable transitioning and learning at the same time. Just my personality I guess :) I'll definitely practice before I remotely put myself out there as some sort of professional. Thanks for the input! :)

Heya,

Oh, and seeing your flickr, maybe a telephoto. You could squeeze in an EF 70-200 F4L (old one). Or you could try and work in a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC.

Very best,

Very best,

Do you work for b&h or adorama? It seems you just try to sell things the OP doesnt really need to begin with?

Nope.

But thanks for the constructive post for the OP.

He wants to do fashion shoots. That takes lighting. The rest is applicable and obvious. He wants a full kit.

What other valuable input do you have?

Very best,
