These pictures are horrible and I shouldn't even post them, but I'm so excited about these sightings that I will anyway. Forgive me.
My neighbor discovered an active pileated woodpecker nest in a dead pine tree on his land. This is from 70 meters hand held and very heavy crop. I cannot wait to get some good captures as this story unfolds.

I heard this incredible song in the treetops and saw a flash of brilliant red come down towards the creek right next to me. A gorgeous scarlet tanager splashed and played in the water like a child about 20 feet away. Naturally I didn’t have my camera. By the time I came back from my house this was the best capture I could get of him high in the trees singing his heart out. A first sighting on our land.

and the Scarlet Tanager was my favourite bird as a little kid. I have never ever seen one still, but when I saw pictures of them, they became my favorite bird. i think I was 5.
