Two VERY poor pictures from today that I’m thrilled with.

These pictures are horrible and I shouldn't even post them, but I'm so excited about these sightings that I will anyway. Forgive me.

My neighbor discovered an active pileated woodpecker nest in a dead pine tree on his land. This is from 70 meters hand held and very heavy crop. I cannot wait to get some good captures as this story unfolds.

Love the dreamy look to the Pileated BTW, you should do long distance hand held as an art form. Congrats on the Scarlet too....I'm still waiting to see one in the summertime.

Here's my sample of a really cool pic that didn't come out worth a darn. As John, another poster told me, sometimes the story is more important than the technical aspects of the photo.

OK Barry, now we'll be waiting for baby Pileated shots. and the Scarlet Tanager was my favourite bird as a little kid. I have never ever seen one still, but when I saw pictures of them, they became my favorite bird. i think I was 5.

Agreed, it's not always the 'perfect' picture but the moment and sometimes all the events/time/effort spent that lead to that moment. I'm still waiting for my owl moment

Photography makes you more sensitive about beauty around you.... the joy you derive out of this alone worth the effort of carrying a camera...

I'll sure give it a try, Bret. I don't know if the quality will improve too much however--I'd rather settle for grainy sorryass pictures than risk disturbing these beauties too much

Great story Barry and I know the feeling about getting the shots no matter what the quality, sometimes the quality is all in what you experienced and your experience seems to ave been top quality!
