I was looking around and doing some reading about audio recording while recording video. At first I was going to get a Rode mic that plugged into my 70D, but after reading it looks like going with an external device to record with along with a mic.

I don't have anything specific I want to shoot (I did record a storm rolling in tonight here in Austin).

Any suggestions as what to go with? I'd say right now a budget of under $250 is what I'd be working with.

Thanks.

Zoom and Tascam both make very-credible devices in that range. I prefer the Tascam line but it has a lot to do with personal preference.... The DR-40 is in your price range and will take XLR inputs as well as having stereo built-in mics. It's only downside is that (as with most devices in this price range) the noise floor on the mic side is higher than I'd like. Whether that matters depends on what you're doing with it.

Note that whatever you get in that regard if you're using it outdoors or anywhere else air moves you WILL need a windsock on it.

I think a nice combination could be a Lavalier microphone + an external audio recorder, so you could obtain a certain boost on the audio level.
The already mentioned zoom and tascam are quite popular.

You might look at this thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1361234

"Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder (normally $320 to $350)

and

(free) Red Giant PluralEyes 3 Audio/Video Sync Software (normally $180)

at B&H for $199.99 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...inear_pcm.html (external link) "

Make that $195 at this moment.

I did look at the Zoom H4N. I don't think the Lavalier mic would do me well. I'll be doing more like shooting video out side (surroundings/ambient noises) for some things. Was looking at like the Rode VideoMic Go to connect to the zoom and set off camera as to not get any noise from the camera/lens itself.

I shoot a lot of different ways, depending on what's needed.
The nicest kit I use without hiring a sound recordist is a Tascam DR100mkII and either a shotgun or 1-2 lavs. For audio in B-roll, I really like the Rode VideoMic Pro plugged directly in the camera. You just have to be conscious of operating noise when there's something going on you'll want to catch.
If you're doing interviews, on camera audio is pretty gross. You'll notice a massive difference with a shotgun overhead.
