So I just picked up a new 24-105 (guess I should have bought the kit lol) because my brother and I are going on a trip out to LA this weekend.

I have some primes but nothing in the 24mm range, shortest prime I have is actually 50mm.

My question is, I want the sharpest landcape shots I can get and I want them to be great shots I can do a canvas print and hang up in my apt.

So my question is, I've messed with HDR in camera but that's obviously only in JPG

Any pointers for how to do landscape shots? I usually take photos of people and not objects or scapes so I don't want bokeh or oof areas really. I want sharp and crips with great colors.

I've seen great work with the 24-105 in this respect. Should I buy one of those pink filters for the front of my lens? Or is it best to just shoot RAW and adjust sky ect in post? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I know it's short notice but I really want to make these pictures count. Thanks!

Heya,

The 24-105L, stopped down to F8 for depth of field for a landscape/cityscape, is going to be about as sharp as it's going to get. All these lenses, including a kit lens, stopped down for depth of field, are going to be very sharp.

Landscape is best done at the beginning of the day (right before sunrise) and end of the day (sunset). Mid-day is horrible, unless your city has a wonderful blanket of consistent smog to keep the light even and not harsh (;)). I would do your city "walk around" shooting during the day. Do your landscape shots in the AM and PM.

Shoot RAW.

The only thing to make it easier to do landscape with sky involved and minimize post-work, is to use a graduated ND filter (3 stop soft edge graduated ND would be my suggestion). But you can do this in post processing if you're good with software. I'm not, so I use filters.

Very best,

What exactly does the ND filter do? And what about that pink filter does it make the sky look good? I'm doing research when I get home today but I wanted some info or advice or links in the meantime. THanks!

What you might want is a 77mm circular polarizer, not a pink filter. Here is a link to one on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com …ds=77mm+polarizing+filter (external link)

Here is a link to an article on how to use it. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com …ls/polarizing-filters.htm (external link)

ND filter are neutral density filters, that allow you to filter out light on bright days. Here is a link to an article about those.

Heya,

Neutral Density (ND) filters stop light. The sky is brighter than the foreground, so in landscape, people either do composites (several images at different exposures) or you can use filters to stop down the sky, and not the foreground (using a graduated neutral density filter). Both take experience and practice to do either method. Software costs money. Filters cost money. So it really is just two different ways to do the same thing.

Pink filters are just colored, they warm the image. Usually colored filters block their opposing color (like yellow blocking blue, with a yellow filter). Using a pink filter will warm it up, make it have that pink glow to it. You can do this in post using Curves without buying anything if you have software already.

I like filters personally. I don't like spending hours on the computer trying to make an image do something when I can just do it before hand via filters, and spend next to zero time in post (I just convert RAW -> TIFF -> Crop/Levels/minorSharpening -> JPG usually as a work flow). I don't like having to do composites or anything as I'm not skilled with software. So I do it the old clunky way, fumbling filters in the field ;)

Very best,
