Just what the title says - has anybody used Zeiss lens cleaning wipes? Are they good for lenses, or only for eyeglasses?

I had some and they worked fine for as long as I owned the wipes and lenses. So, that's my use case.

But, someone else on the forum did some investigating and found that these wipes are not approved for cleaning optical coatings (ie - lenses). Even though I had no issues even over long term use, I stopped using them just to be safe.

Perhaps you can contact Zeiss and ask them if they are intendeed for cleaning their lenses (not glasses.) I doubt it.

No problems with these wipes on any clear surface.

I use them occasionally (when out and about if required) but use a bottled liquid and micro-fibre on the desk. I then read this....

....... and found that these wipes are not approved for cleaning optical coatings (ie - lenses).

and became concerned.

Zeiss' own documentation for the product states

"Spectacles, binoculars and cameras" going on to say....
"Suitable for: All spectacles, particularly high-quality, coated precision lenses"

I want to say it was Frank Hollis (Hollis_f) that had gone through the trouble of contacting Zeiss to determine that these weren't recommended for camera lenses. I have two boxes of them just sitting now. Personally, I never cared for their rough feel or the way they seemed to leave a faint film on the lens.

Consigned to spectacle cleaning now.

From what I have learned based on my research is that these wipes were designed for Zeiss eye glass lenses and not for camera lenses. Zeiss does have a consumer eye glass division.

My concern with these wipes is the Canon lens coating and how the wipes will affect this coating. I now don't use them to clean any of my camera lenses.

I've used these for years with no ill effects. Here is what their website says.

"The pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes from ZEISS with their unique combination of active agents provide gentle and thorough cleaning. Independent tests* confirm: the microfine tissues offer the most effective cleaning performance – gentle without causing scratches in comparison to ten alternative products. These tissues have an especially fine structure which does not damage modern prescription spectacle lenses or their coatings. They are pre-moistened with a special combination of two active agents, free from aggressive cleaning substances and artificial fragrances. Individually packaged, the tissues are quickly to hand in every situation and have lasting results: they ensure better vision and longer-lasting spectacle lenses.

Each ZEISS lens wipe pack contains an application description for the optimal care of prescription spectacle lenses as well as additional information on better vision. The new cleaning wipes from ZEISS are also suitable for other optical surfaces and LCD displays, such as digital cameras, laptops, smartphones and mobile phones."

The Zeiss user manual says this:

"ZEISS lens wipes are the professional solution for cleaning lenses and other optical surfaces thoroughly yet gently. Suitable for:

• All spectacles, particularly high-quality, coated precision lenses

• Optical surfaces (e.g. LCD displays, smartphones, tablet PCs, laptops, mobile phones, etc.)

Free from:
• Aggressive glass-cleaning substances
• Artificial fragrances

The high-quality micro-fine tissue wipes and the specific combination of just two active ingredients set new standards in the cleaning of glasses.

Contains: isopropanol, ethanol"

I really don't see an issue using these wipes.

There was a user here years ago who had some damage caused by using those wipes. When he aggressively followed up the company pretty much admitted these were not designed for cleaning camera lenses. They are also not really connected with Zeiss, beyond a licensing agreement.

I just thought of something - are they good for cleaning the filters? I use them. I guess the coating on the filters are on the inside.

Please no comments on filters usage! :-)

A filter is essentially the same as cleaning a lens. But these are mass produced for cleaning eyeglasses.

I just don't know if filter glass is coated on both sides, or only inside, while lenses are coated outside, and that may be the difference between cleaning the filters and the lenses. Does anybody know?

If you feel they are safe for one, then they ought to be safe for both. But like I said before, after reading up on them in that older thread I would avoid them altogether in favor of microfiber cloth.
