I just don't know if filter glass is coated on both sides, or only inside, while lenses are coated outside, and that may be the difference between cleaning the filters and the lenses. Does anybody know?

Quality multi-coated filters are coated on both sides.

I've used those wipes, but they end up being rather expensive. And, as someone noted, they tend to leave a bit of a haze that you have to follow up and clean off with a Lens Pen or micro fiber cloth.

Instead I usually use micro fibers cloths that can be washed and reused a few times, along with various lens cleaning solutions (including Zeiss', which is excellent). I follow up with a Lens Pen.

I thought, and am somewhat confirmed by youngr's post above, that there were two versions of the wipes - one for eyeglasses and the like, and one for camera/multi-coated lenses. I thought that was mentioned in an older thread about these wipes (yes, there are a few threads about these wipes here on POTN).

I think these are the ones for lens.

From the label:

"Ammonia-free formula safely cleans all lenses, especially those with anti-reflective multi-layer coatings."

I've been using these with no issues (and no 'greasy film'), but I normally don't have to clean lenses very often so my experience may not be representative of others.

They've listed just about everything, except camera lenses. Why do you think they omitted those?
They as much as say, not for camera lenses.

An important thing here is that the coating on camera lenses aren't unique. There are a large number of different coatings of binoculars and glasses too.

The wipes are either safe for both camera lenses and glasses or they aren't safe for either of them.

I did a quick amazon search when close to 10% of the reviews are one star, I would stay away, one reviewer claimed left smears on their L lens.

But then all cleaning methods leaves smears if you are doing it wrong. It isn't always the elite of the elite who are giving the low votes of different products. And people who fail seems to like to log in and give their votes while happy users much more seldom see a big need to inform others about how happy they are.

It's all in the "I'm angry. Let's make sure this costs them money" attitude when people don't like something.

I want to say it was Frank Hollis (Hollis_f) that had gone through the trouble of contacting Zeiss to determine that these weren't recommended for camera lenses

Nope, weren't me.

IIRC it was somebody who worked in microscopy and was told that the Zeiss wipes weren't recommended for microscope lenses.

The wipes will not damage any lens coatings chemically as they're just water and propan-2-ol (external link). The material may abrade coatings, but I'd be surprised.

No one said Walmart cleans the lenses, they simply sell the Zeiss wipes.

It seems clear to me that they simply contain the same alcohol we use to clean lenses in most lens cleaning products. I've used them for years.
I also use them on glasses and my cell phone screen.

I own use and like them for travel especially. In fact I "discovered" them in Africa in 2006, when one of our POTN crew had packed a box. The rest of us were struggling with "Eclipse" and "pecpads" etc.. in the African desert and dust.. When we saw how easy these were to use after a quick brushing, we'd been schooled in ease of use in difficult environment.

Now I never travel without them. And unlike bottles of flammable gunk, the Airlines tend to ignore them completely.

As for smearing? Ever try Eclipse? A few times using that I was convinced I'd trashed the lens. Technique is everything.

Lastly, the best wet solution I've used is "ROR"

It says on the packet...

"Safely and quickly clean most optics, including eyeglass lenses, laptops, camera lenses, sunglasses, cell phones, and many others."

"Safe for use on lenses with anti-reflective coatings"

While we're on the topic, what's the verdict on the Lens Pen?

Hmm... I have now tried these Zeiss lens cleaning wipes couple of times and unfortunately I'm not too happy with the result. I had to use Hama wet cleaning cloths to get my lenses clean after using Zeiss wipes.

I asked Zeiss if these wipes are really suitable for cleaning camera lenses.

I got reply 8 days ago and have not heard anything since then.

"Of course, the ZEISS lens wipes are suitable for cleaning camera lenses.

I’m surprised as we normally do not have any kind of complaints either on camera lenses nor on spectacle lenses."

Now I have 200 pack of Zeiss wipes that I will not use to clean my camera lenses.

Sorry to bump this back up, but last year someone mentioned to me they were not safe. i found on the website where it did indeed claim it was good for things like camera lenses. the box I have even describes them as being good for use on things like camera lenses.

is it possible that 5 years back they were not recommended? I'm sure it is but things change and they now say these are ok to use.

i've gone through a box of 200 from amazon alreadyand have found them to be even cheaper at WalMart, bought 300 three weeks back for about $5/100. I use them almost daily on my crizal lens glasses and use them as needed on my L lenses.
