Hey POTN! I have a really simple question regarding wireless flash use. I am planning on buying the Canon 430EX II here soon and was wondering if I can trigger it wirelessly with the Canon ST-E2/E3? I just want to make sure I don't have to purchase anything else(I noticed the PocketWizard has two parts to it, which is why I ask). Sorry for the noob question, but this is my first time entering the flash-lighting world. Many thanks!

Ste2 yes. Ste3 no. The 3 has radio only for the 600rt series flash.

Which is why many people opt for either Yn's 622Cs or Phottix Odins (my choice) - or - stick with simple M only Radio triggers like Yn 603 Mark IIs.

I take it the YN's are the cheaper alternative? If so, are they worth it over the ST-E2?

Hi, I used to use the ST-E2. Two Groups, HSS & such - but no remotely adjusted M flash by Group. Fundamentally it's Optical//IR control & triggering - so line of sight / reflected IR pre-flash limitations apply.

Yn offer (both Radio based comms): 1) the 603 Mark IIs - simple, cheap & do what they claim, or
2) their 622Cs - add ETTL and remotely adjustable M power fractions by Group (assuming fully compatible Speedlites).

Odins - close to perfection - but cost more . . .

I'd stay away from the ST-E3 option only because radio is far more reliable.

The ST-E3 is radio control. You mean to stay away from the ST-E2, which is optical?

Yes I meant to say ST-E2. Thanks for that catch. I have an ST-E3.

Is the YN worth it over the Phottix? I noticed the YN is a lot cheaper (About $150 cheaper).

When the Phottix came out they were competing with the much higher priced pocket wizard line. The YN is more recent and decided to create their own market category. The YN's will do pretty much everything you want. The only difference that I know of is the adjustable timing for using them for hypersync with studio strobes. The YN are a great bargain.

Yes, that will work, but the YN-622C's are much cheaper and work great. The YN-622C's are more limiting if you use older cameras or older flashes, but since you have a 60D and plan to buy a 430EX II, they will work well and be easy to use.

Did you know that your 60D can use the built-in flash to optically trigger a 430EX II just like an ST-E2? Radio triggers are better but the Canon optical system works pretty well indoors.
