Morning!

I'm looking for a portrait lense for my Canon 5D Classic.

My good friend has a 85 1.8. It's really nice. But in combination with a 50 1.8, it is next by this lense.

How big is the difference in the bokeh of this three lenses?

What lense ist the best of quality and price for a 5D?

I would choose either the 85mm or 135mm lens depending on how much working distance you intend to have from the subject.
They complement each other nicely if you get both.
As the post above me says, a nice 35mm, maybe the f2 IS, will give you a great trinity of primes.
Used lenses are a great way to save cash for the next lens. :D
Good luck!

Yes, I've already the EF 50 1.8 II. And want to buy an UWW. So I need a portrait lense

Yes, why not the 100mm 2.0? Isn't it better in combination with the 50 1.8? The 135 2.0 is much expensive, is it fair for the price? Because the 100 2.0 costs a party of the 135mm 2.0...

How is the bokeh difference?

I am basing my lens recommendation on the choices you provided.
While a 85mm lens would not compliment you 50mm lens as well as the 100mm or 135mm in terms of FL,
it may not be a reason not to get it.

The first step is to determine what kind of portrait you want to take and how much room you have to work with.
(physical room to back up, etc)

The 85 1.8 give you the widest view of the three lenses and therefore be the most useable option.
The CA is know to be 'bad' on the lens wide open, but easily corrected in post processing.

If I had a 135L and I could not back up more, all I would shoot is the model's nose.

I have not tried the 100 f2 myself. It just seem to me like an out of place lens.
I mean, I have used the 100mm macro USM with great success for portrait at f2.8
I initially chose the 100mm macro for 1:1 macro, and did not consider portraiture specifically, I didn't seek buying a 100mm f2

There would of course be more blur in the bokeh with the faster lens wide open.
The 85 1.8 can make a great portrait lens, but is bokeh on the 135L is more fluid and less distracting.
The 135L give you the most compression, and marginally better colors and contrast as the L glass quality is known for.

I recommend viewing a sample thread..
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1287825
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1145005

And lastly I will share my own personal experience.
For me budget was a huge concern when buying my lesnes last year. I decided to try macro, bought a used 100mm macro (non USM)
I liked it a lot and decided to upgrade it, briefly considered the 100L but couldn't justify it. Sold the (non-USM) and bought the USM

Well 4 months (and several paychecks later) I decided to sell the USM and buy the 100L after all. No regrets on my decision. :D
My point is this, while great photos come from all three lenses, You will get the best colors, contrast, and smoother bokeh from the 135L.
Since you listed it, you must be considering it. If that is the FL you need, then I recommend saving up the extra cost.

I am not saying you MUST get the L lens. I am simply saying if you spend that extra money you won't be disappointed with it.
In fact, you should buy all three used and try them out yourself. Then sell the one that interests you the least.

In another thread I was considering swapping my 100L for the 135L but could not give up it's macro abilities.
But then I would just need to re-buy a 100mm USM for macro. That would not suit my personal needs.

135mm is a great focal length for outdoor portraits - the 85mm can indoor and outdoor.

Although not related to your post this thread is great. I have been actively following this thread for over a year now:

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1295241

It is all about people using zooms and primes and swapping out lenses and their reason for doing so.
It is a good read. It has many users explaining why they chose one lens over another.

I knew space came at a premium in Japan, but I didn't think it was this bad... ;)

Beg, steal, borrow, rent an EF 70-200 lens. Use it for a while. You need to discover what your prefferd mm is. We cannot help you with that.

Heya,

Depends on the kind of portrait work you're doing, and where you're doing it.

Inside studio with a background that is relatively close to the subject? Short focal length. Stick with the 50, maybe entertain a 35.

Outside doing environmental portrait work? The 85~200 range is gold.

The "best" is sort of subjective, but you'll find a lot of "best" terminology regarding portrait, around the 85L II and the 200 F2L IS.

Very best,

Ha ha! That is a common misconception. Parts of Tokyo and many other large cities are very cramped just like any major urban city worldwide. Around my town I could easily shoot a model with a 1200mm lens it is often very bright and sunny here.
But of candid street shots and most locations I find my 100mm lens to cover my telephoto needs. I can alway crop and image for framing.
The other 95% of Japan is wide open valleys between sharp, and tall mountains.

Here is a great resource on bokeh strength comparison. Just change the MM and F as desired and update.

Thank you!

I like 50mm on the 5D very much. So this MM is for my camera system very important.

I think, I'll take 50mm for indoor shootings and outdoor I'll buy the EF 100mm 2.0. The 135 2.0 is better, but in procent very expensive to the 100mm 2.0. The 85 1.8 is nice, but to hear at my 50mm 1.8.

Zooms like 70-200 2.8 are too heavy for my and my trips.

So I'm going the this combination: 5D, 17-40 (?), 50 1.8, 100 2.0. :D
