Sup dudes and dudettes. :D

All of my educational materials for landscape photography are free for use. If you find it helpful and have money to spend, please leave a donation! If people like the current materials, then I can hopefully have the time and money to make more of them.

Even if you don't like doing landscapes, see if you can get through my Milkyway photoshop tutorial using the RAW files. I dare you! :p

 Only donate if you make it through a tutorial and learn something! I was giving a 100% guarantee on them anyway, so I figure I might as well give you the guarantee up front for free and then you can decide what it was worth to you.

I have a bunch of new guides to make here soon. The tutorials are sooooooooooo insanely mind numbing to code and write, that I will have to take a few months before doing another set.

Hey gang, happy Tuesday ~

qurstion - when we have the internal flash up because we want it to send out a pulse so it is easier for us to AF - but we don't want to use flash in the shot - how do we do that with the 60D/70D?

I'm not trying to do it but if that flash pulse goes out helping us to find focus - do we then just close the 'lid' and take the shot?

I guess back-button focus would be handy too, so the shutter can just be metering and take the shot.

Just pondering, thanks ~

I suppose you could put the fec way down. I've not used the "pulse" on the 60d. Does it emit an ir beam? My 622c will act as a focus assist tool if I need it to.

Camera 2 | Flash Control to disable flash and CF II-5 to enable AF-Assist beam, maybe?

hmm, well you got me thinking and so I went into my 70D's C.fn II : Autofocus, 5 ~ AF-assist beam firing... and in M mode it never did shoot that AF pulse...

now I'm not sure how to enable it!

its worked in the past although have not tried with the 70D... guess it was the 60D... testing more...

update: bizarre... I cleared my flash settings, and the flash did the flicker- af thing... went back to my settings and I'll be darned if I can see anything different in the settings!

also peculiar is that when I flip the flash lid down - suddenly it is able to focus inside much much easier than it was previously too...

guess more testing is in order... the flash AF - pulse thing does not have much range, btw

I hate that thing with the fire of a thousand suns.

What I do is slap on my 430 EX II, and then in the flash menu disable the flash, which still allows the AF assist to fire. If canon was smart (ha) and for some probably inflated price they just had a dedicated AF assist light for the hotshoe I would buy one in an instant. The only way to get that now is get one of the wireless IR flash triggers that also has an AF assist light in it, but for $350 new, no thanks.

You can get a yn622c for about $40 to use as an af assist beam. Or are you talking about something else that is lost on me? (which I suspect)

No, just the AF assist beam. I would just like to only have a small AF assist beam that uses a single AA or something. Something pocketable and light.
