Have any of you had your hands on the Canon EFs 10-18 lens? I've been looking to get a W/A zoom of some sort and started out looking at used lenses on the classifieds here. I've seen a couple W/A Sigmas and the like listed at $250 or so, which doesns't seem unreasonable, but they seem to be more than a few years old.

Then I see the Canon EFs 10-18 NEW for $300. I know it's a lighter build than some of the third party lenses but it seems to get good reviews. And it would have a warranty and it's got IS to boot.

It sounds like a no-brainer to me but I figure hearing some hands on experience couldn't hurt.

Thank you, Pekka! I'm sure some members here might have imagined that POTN might begin winding down. But that doesn't make the news any less disappointing. So generous of you to allow us to go along for the ride. As a result you gave us a way to help each other become better photographers. But there's still so much more to learn.

I don't recall reading anyone in this thread talking about it. I could have missed it, though. The archive thread has 15 pages.

Thanks, Stro! That's the kind of info I was looking for. Did a site search but didn't have much luck. Searching seems a bit more complicated since the site makeover and I don't have the hang of it yet.

Like what I'm seeing from the shots you linked to. Distortion seems pretty well controlled and $50 extra doesn't seem too bad for an added warranty and IS. Have to see if the local shops can hit the price.

I'd say go for it. Looks to be pretty decent, for three bills.

Yes I did buy one a couple of months ago (got it from greentoe for 285-25 greentoe rebate = 260). I love it but really haven't gotten many chances to use it, 10mm is really wide compared to 15mm (the widest I had used). The distortion is there but you kinda have to expect that, and the IS really seems to help (not that I have used any lenses without IS other than a 60mm macro I borrowed from a friend) but you can get some pretty damn slow shutter speeds with it. I bet you could get it for 275 from greentoe - what ever rebate they have going at the moment. It feels pretty solid and is really quiet and focuses super fast compaired to either of my other lenses (which I know are not great).

the canon USA site has refurbs for 215 right now (granted it is sold out lol) but even after the sale is over they will only be 240. I bet they sold out fast at 215 but you could put in a email alert with canonpricewatch and if they come back in stock they will let you know and hopefully you could snag one for 215.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but I just wanted to say that my New Year's resolution for 2015 is 5,184 x 3,456. ;-)a
