An unfortunate photographer left his Nikon D4 out in the elements because he was doing some timelapse photography

Unfortunately a storm came along

Personally, I wouldn't leave my gear out to the elements even it cost me 100s of quid. Nothing to do with affordability, just I don't like doing it

I don't think I would walk away and leave my equipment in pouring rain, facing up like that, for half a day, however I have shot my 1-series bodies with weather sealed lenses in the rainforest and at sporting events where it rained, with no ill effects, after all that is what it was made to do.

I wouldn't leave gear out in the open like that, but I would happily build custom enclosures. My worry would be less about weather damage, and more about obvious camera gear walking off.

I am happy enough shooting in the rain, even with my less weather resistant bodies, but wouldn't intentionally leave one out in the rain for that long with no protection. However, it doesn't sound from the article that the photographer was expecting it to rain like that.

Maybe one of the coverings people use for underwater photography?

I bought a watherproof case for my G1X. I can leave the camera in the bottom of the canoe while I am paddling and have no worries. I do have it tethered because it would float away in the event of a capsize... the cause of death of my previous camera.
A waterproof (more than weatherproof) case is available for the G1X mk 11 as well.

To add to this, when the UK had the worst rain weather, the only thing it ruined was my composition of more or less of every photo because I was using the 16-35mm, but I covered it with a plastic bag
