Dirty Pete is just about the easiest hummingbird I've ever worked with.

*** - Since posting these pics, I have been asked (by a member of the POTN community via PM) if my hummingbird images are composites. The answer is no. Not only are they not composites, I do very little PP work to the images (RAW = sharpness of 3, standard pic style, usually contrast of +1 and adjust exposure to taste PP = clone dust spots, clone out second catchlight if present, and minor dodging and burning. Beyond what I do in RAW, there is no sharpening. And that's it. I go through great pains to do everything right in camera and spend hours shooting everyday for months every season for the last decade. the person who asked the question did not state why they thought my images were composites.

Nice Stuff. Dirty Pete has great colors.

I've only seen one hummer this year so far. We usually have a lot of activity early.

My wife says its probably because my feeder was empty. oops:

So, I filled it up, and nothing!

Checked it out and have ants climbing up my avocado tree and down the string that suspends the feeder.

I guess the hummers don't like ants.

So now its a game to see who is smarter, me or the ants.

Until then, keep the pics coming twoshadows.

Thanks MadJack. Lol about the empty feeder. As far as the ants, i put my feeder on an old mic stand (from my music days) so I can move it where I want and the ants can rarely keep up. :)

Bret, I had this lovely and long winded reply for you and forgot to post it before I closed my browser (D'oh!). So now you get the short answer (lucky you :D ). I used to do an official close up of each hummingbird, but that stopped in 2012. I guess the reason is that 2012 is the year I finally started creating the images I had in mind when I started photographing hummingbirds in '05. My goal in capturing images of hummingbirds has always been to emulate the stylized illustrations of them from the 20th century. So now, the size of the bird within the frame is dependent mostly on the size of the plant/flower on which he's feeding.

Love `em Ian....the flowers and Dirty Pete are gorgeous.
I agree that having the flower stalk in frame is a beautiful approach, but like Bret I yearn to see Dirty Pete's pretty little face a little closer too. I know, can't have everything.
I just wish my male(s) would behave as cooperatively as Dirty Pete!

Lol, Steve, I agree about Dirty Pete cause they're not all like him. It's been a fantastic spring so far due to him. And, for you and Bret, I submit the following: A crop of Dirty Pete so you can see his face. :D
