My trusty 40D is now 7 years old. It has and continues to give me good results when I do my part.
It's a great camera with my EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens.
I recently bought a 24-105mm f/4 L lens. So far, love it! ;) I was advised before I bought the lens that it wasn't made for a crop camera and was much better on a FF body, I knew that going in and don't regret the purchase.
After reading all I can on the use of this lens on the 40D vs the 6D, I'm thinking it is time for and upgrade to FF.
I only have three lenses that will work on the 6D but for now I think I can get by with those.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 IS
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 IS
Canon EF 40mm Pancake.

My concern is, I don't think I'm really that good of a photographer to warrant the extra cost to transition to FF.

Have you considered getting a 5D classic instead?

Heya,

What do you shoot?
What features do you think you need from a new camera?

If you're not a good photographer per your own words, why not focus that time & energy on improving? Buying new toys will not make you better at it and they are tools that do what they are told, so if you're not telling them how to output the image you want to see, they won't.

Very best,

No because of the huge difference in price. :)

I don't mind spending $1700 for the 6D but I can't justify $2500 + for the 5D.

5D classic goes for around $500 at the moment.

I would not bother going from 40D to 5Dc. The 5Dc is a good workhorse camera, but it's not an upgrade really for you. A modern crop for the same cost (T5i) will simply be better in almost every way, except for depth of field control being maximum, with way more features and wiggle room for the future.

Going full frame is not an upgrade. It's just another tool.

I would focus on finding out what tool is best for your needs and budget. If you can afford a 6D, then I would definitely get a 6D over the 5D, not even a question. The question is, do you need a 6D? Or will a more modern crop do what you need, for a third of the cost?

So again, what do you think you need in a new camera?

Very best,

For me going from a 40D to a 5D was a huge upgrade in image quality and I mean HUGE. It may be old but it is still a wonderful camera. Not too well suited for action of course, but beautiful files.

My thoughts exactly. The 5Dc is a great camera. I sold mine and bought a 6D about six months ago. The 6D is a way better camera, in almost every respect. The ONLY reason to go for a 5Dc is limited funding.

Do it!

I went from a t1i to the 6D and it has allowed me to get shots I just would not have been able to before... especially at night!

Your glass is totally capable and you can hit the ground running so to speak.

Don't look at a 5Dc or even a 5DII. Always get the newest you can afford.

Just do it, seriously. No need to even ask the question.

I upgraded from a 40D to a 5D mark ii a couple years ago & would recommend the same move now. The 5D2 is a significant upgrade & can be had for about $1000. There are tons of them for sale now as well, so you might have some success lowballing on ones that have been on the market for awhile.

I would also just keep the 40D around as a back-up. Nobody seems to want them anymore, but they are still a fantastic camera if you don't need video.

The ISO capabilities of the 6d is better than 5d2 by a decent margin, so I wouldn't really consider it.

Also, I did exactly that, 40d to 6d, and I'm very happy I did.

Absolutely correct. The AF system is also better. There is also a $300-$500 difference between the two on the used market right now. So I would still consider the 5Dii to be a better value for somebody that isn't sure they want to drop $1500 on getting a FF camera.

On the other hand, as MalVeauX said, if the OP isn't really cranking up the ISO on his 40D or is particularly wanting some of the features of newer cameras, perhaps the need for an upgrade isn't there at all. The 24-105mm is perfectly fine on a cropped sensor camera.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate all of them, really. ;)

The 24-105mm is perfectly fine on a cropped sensor camera.

That was my thinking when I ordered the 24-105 f/4 but I caught a lot of negative flak from the FF crowd for using the 24-105 on my 40D.

The question is, do you need a 6D? Or will a more modern crop do what you need, for a third of the cost?

From what I have read, the 24-105 works at its best on a FF body. And, the IQ is far better with the 6D. I can't imagine why I would want to get another crop body.

IF, I do buy the 6D I will most definitely keep the 40D. If for no other reason to have a second camera and so I can still use my 17-55 f/2.8.

Thanks again...

I switched from a 40D to 6D and could not be happier. The 6D brings so many improvements, that it is almost a no brainer. The ISO improvement alone, will knock your socks off.

Canon 6D and lovin' it.
