Hi,
Could someone help me to decide should I jump from Canon 40D to Canon 6D or to Sony A7?
Thanks a lot.

Heya,

What are you wanting to shoot? What lenses do you already have? What features are you most seeking?

Very best,

What kind of glass do you have? Some of your glass may not be compatible with the full frame 6D.

Interesting features in the A7 like weather seal, 100% viewfinder, etc ... but there is some cons also ..
Same for the 6D some pros and cons

The 6D has just as much weather sealing as the A7, it also has an OVF instead of an EVF which although EVF's are getting to be pretty good, most people still prefer the former.

That said, they're both great cameras, it depends on what you shoot and what you intend to use it for OP. Personally I'd buy an X-T1 over both unless like me you need high ISO capability, in which case I'd opt for the 6D or wait for a few reviews of the upcoming A7s.

I posted nearly the same question yesterday.
Long story short, I ordered the 6D.

The 6d has better AF, infinitely better native lens selection, better auxiliary support (flashes and such). You can jump into a 6d system and not miss a step. The 6d is pretty much the same size and weight of a 60d.

The A7 is much more compact and can adapt a wide range of lenses from other makers if you don't mind manual focus or slower AF with adapters. Of course, with adapters you're losing some of the size advantage. The A7 is pretty comfortable to hold and very solid, feels like a solid chunk of metal. Great build quality but the menus and choices are Sony (if you've used a Sony SLR you know they can be confusing and oddball in some ways). The fastest native lenses you're going to get are a 55 1.8 ($1000) and a 35 2.8 ($800). Everything else is f4 or slower including upcoming lenses. You're going to lose a lot of battery life compared to a 6d.

I was enamored with the A7 until I dealt with native lens selection and AF performance. I wasn't impressed with either in my weekend with the A7. I don't want to manually focus unless I'm filming. The A7 shows great potential but it isn't there yet. Sony is a bit ADD with tech and although they get excited and love the tech of cameras, you see that they have little interest in the lens aspect of interchangeable lens systems. They are coming out with a THIRD A7 and still only have 5 native lenses. At the rate they're going they'll have as many bodies as native lenses! :/

BrickR: exactly my thoughts.

A7 still needs time to grow up. AF system is very limiting and battery life even more.

It all depends on what you shoot. I'm a landscape shooter and almost all of my lenses are manual focus anyway so it was an easy decision to move over to the A7r. Sure the battery life isn't as good, the EVF takes some getting used to, and there aren't as many accessories as of yet, but I find the jump in image quality, dynamic ranger, and resolution more than enough reason to make the leap. But, I don't shoot anything that moves so AF is an afterthought. I also find the Metabones adapter great (though not cheap) so I could care less about native lenses. All of my lenses work just as well on the Sony as they do on my 6D. So just weigh the pros and cons and pick which one will suit your situation.

Without knowing what or how much you have invested in Canon lens, you may want to consider a Nikon D600 as well. For the most part you will have an excellent sensor and a traditional dslr body with those features. While the 6D has a good sensor, the lack of af points other cameras in its price range have was a real turn off in my case.

The sony a7/a7r paired with good glass and technique though can produce stunning images as long as you understand its shortcomings as a mirrorless vs traditional dslr system.

Depends on the lenses you have and what you want to shoot.

We need more info, both are great cameras!

My friend just sold his Leica M9 for a A7.

I am still undecided, but I'm leaning towards the A7 just so I can shoot with all my legacy glass.
