I guess it bothers people when telephoto is staring at their direction?

The real question is why do you care? You aren't breaking any laws and you are at a public event. If there are no signs posted restricting photography, why even think about it? The only concern you should have is if you are blocking someone's view of the game. We must be courteous as we go about our work.

I'm sure there are some scowling faces in this crowd.

Shot girls high school soccer tonight. There were THREE, count em, THREE 400mm f/2.8 lenses being used as well as a 200-400mm and several 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. Lots of cameras with telephoto lenses are quite common and not noticed anymore.
