The first chicks fledged the nest a week ago and the adults are already incubating 5 more eggs in another nestbox in my backyard. The male is very busy feeding the 2 fledglings along with protecting the female as she incubates their second clutch of eggs.

I've been watching your family in the other universe, must be a joy to drive home and see all the kids, even that one with the attitude lol. Top notch IQ, everything is superb.
Well done indeed !

I've been patient and it only took 6 years to get a pair of Bluebirds to move into my yard. Although my yard can support them with natural food and plenty of shelter it took a lot of mealworms to get them to stay and nest. I can finally document the nesting process of Bluebirds and I hope to continue to do so in the years to come. I've learned a lot and why I enjoy this hobby.

I am completely new to this. I have a pair that have been here one week and it looks like the nest is finished. I saw them this morning briefly but not tonight. How long after nest completion will the female lay her first egg? I wondered what they were doing all day today. I usually see the male at night but I did not see him this evening. My other nest box has tree swallows in it. I also have another nesting pair of barn swallows too.

With this pairs first nest they built I think it was almost 1 1/2-2 weeks after it was complete she started laying eggs. On the second nest it was completed before their first brood fledged the first nestbox and it took about the same time before she started laying eggs.

Thanks for the info. Do they always change to a new box for their next brood? I would think this nest will keep the couple busy until July sometime. Is this likely the final nest? I read you are suppose to clean out the box once the babies fledge because they do not return to the nest box.

Those are both fantastic images Duane and comical poses all at the same time!
I laughed hard at the insistent young'un pestering Dad. I only have visiting Bluebirds at present but your images reminded my so much of those in my backyard. Ahhh Spring, ya gotta love it!
