I'm spoiling myself to add a quick release adapter to each of my devices for a faster setup experience, I went with the Giottos MH621 and they sucked, I wasn't able to tighten up the nobs on the side due to my DSLR being in the way. Any Manfrotto 501 compatible that is as cheap?

Video quick release plates were never really designed to be used with DSLR's and that is why they don't work very well in many cases. My solution was to add a regular Arca-Swiss style clamp to the top of the video head sliding plate.

I don't have any photos handy, but here is someone who did something similar..... http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/54/859897 (external link)

I standardized on the Manfrotto 501 quite some time ago, but your idea looks better.

I've never really had a problem tightening the 501s onto my DSLR; just pull the lever out a bit to disengage it from the shaft, then rotate until it's in the right place. Takes a bit more time than an Arca-Swiss, though.

I just learned of this new product that is being released very soon from Acratech.

Really looks like a solution for me so I can use the thing for video and photos and have a QR solution /ballhead/fluid head solution all in one ($600).

I confirm I use a RRS quick release clamp on the top of the video head. One of the things I found was that it is necessary to remove the rubber from the plate before fitting the QR plate. This reduces 'play' in the setup and gets a good solid connection through to the tripod feet with minimal movement.
