By a stupid mistake, I thought I was holding a 7D and attempted to put the EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM on the camera. But it was the 1DX I had in my hand. The EF-S lens doesn't fit, of course, but the problem was that the rubber ring at the rear of the lens, that ring which prevents mounting on an EF lenses only body, it opened the latch for the focusing screen. The screen frame opened, the screen fell out, dropped to the floor and got scratched.
It still works, but it looks like there is that kind of annoying dust on it, just this dust will not let itself be blown away.

Not that it's very expensive to get a new one, but quite unnecessary. So don't mess with EF-S lenses near your 1DX!

OK, if I ever do have a 1DX I will be sure to never put an EF-S lens on that model

I assume that most 1DX users would only attach a lens with a red ring hence this eliminate the confusion ;)

If you can live with the scratch, but not the dust...

  1. Hold the focusing screen only by its edges!
  2. Make a solution of dish washing liquid with water, immerse the focusing screen in that soapy water to remove the dust -- DO NOT WIPE the surface with a cloth!!!
  3. Rinse the soapy water off, under running water.
  4. Pour DISTILLED water over the focusing screen on both sides, so last rinse is free of any dissolved minerals in tap water
  5. Then stand the focusing screen on edge, to air dry. DO NOT WIPE dry!!!

Maybe... just maybe, it's time to remove the vertical/battery grip from your 7D? That way, it should be more difficult to mistaken the two.

Though by weight and feel alone, even the gripped 7D feels quite different (more plasticky) than the 1DX.

Sorry to hear about your focusing screen though.

It does sound like a reason to get the Precision Focusing Screen. It is the best $22 I spent on gear. :)

Indeed most of the lenses I use on the 1DX have the red ring, even if not all, but the thing here was that I thought I was putting the lens on the 7D.

Removing the grip from the 7D isn't too interesting, since in this case it's a WFT-E5B, so the camera would loose the ability to transfer images wirelessly to an FTP server, and other such convenient stuff.

Instead I look at it like this: If anything had to fall on the floor, the only thing cheaper would have been a lens cover...

Haha, Terri, age has converted me into a lighter color too, even if it's not exactly blonde.

Whose 'precision focusing screen'?

If an aftermarket product, without the CFn setting (provided for Canon screens) to correct out metering error introduced by deviations from the standard focusing screen, the meter is not reliably accurate in all circumstances.
