Hi,
What would you consider as the best alternative to a Canon 60D DSLR in the P&S cameras? Would like decent zoom as well as very good IQ and easy to tote around.
Thanks...
Al

Price range?

A canon G series would be good. I have a G15 which cost $4-500 a couple years ago (but looks to be under $400 these days: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …t_G15_Digital_Camera.html (external link)). Has good controls and a good (for a P&S) sensor. It hasn't really gotten a lot of use since I got fuji X-E2, but it's great for trips to the beach, or other adventures that might not be consistent with a bigger or more expensive camera.

Canon 60D | Canon 500D | Canon 430EX II | Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 | Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM 'A' | Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II | Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

My wife has a G10 and I am not sure if I would want to go that route. I checked the specs on the G15 and it has only a 5x zoom lens. Between the SX50HS and G15, the SX50HS got a higher rating. Comparing to a 60D, the SX50HS has lower IQ, which is not surprising considering the smaller sensor. Based on the research I have been doing, I might stick with the 60D. Just wanted something more portable for traveling but with the same quality as the 60D.

Oh, and price range would be what I could get for my 60D body.

Ah, that's a tall order. I think the sx50 has a physically smaller sensor than the G15, so I wouldn't expect that to deliver better results than the G15, or anything close to the 60D. A discounted SL1 or M would probably be slightly better in image quality, but wouldn't have the superzoom capability of the sx50 (or even the G15).

Seems you need to decide how to balance reach, IQ, and portability.

I probably can't be of much more help, but you may need to consider an alternate brand. I believe sony and fuji have units similar to the sx50 with somewhat bigger (better?) sensors.

I looked at smaller, lighter alternatives to the 60D. S100 and G-series are too limited in focal range. I boiled it down to the SX50HS and the Panasonic DMC-FZ200. Both of which fall flat on their faces if you get the ISO above 400. My travel camera is 60D/15-85 without the grip.

You definitely can't get telephoto zoom capability, APS-C sensor, small, light, with fixed lens and relatively cheap all together. You need to choose your priorities and make the appropriate compromises.

One different option is m4/3s. You can get a small body and compact kit lens, and a relatively small zoom lens (with 80-300mm equivalent FL, for example). Then you can add a fast prime for low light. Small body + three relatively small lenses. No real tradeoff vs 60D in IQ; cost is pretty similar; smaller, but certainly not P&S small.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to do what CollegeKid did and keep the 60D along with the 18-135 lens for traveling on a trip we have planned for our upcoming 30th anniversary.
