Q: Retrieving original 3:2 after shooting at other aspect ratio.

Hi all,

I've been shooting with the 5DMK3 for a couple of years now, actually picked it up the day it was released. Great camera!

So my query:

I regularly shoot at the 1:1 crop ratio and often set the in camera aspect ratio to 1:1 to produce the composition I want. In the live view mode I see a 1:1 representation of the scene but when I shoot the shot and preview the image on the LCD it shows the full 3:2 image captured by the sensor plus the two vertical lines indicating where the camera software will crop it down to 1:1.

When later viewing the images in Lightroom, I see that when they are loading, Lightroom initially renders them as a 3:2 while loading and then renders them to 1:1 as stipulated by the data in the RAW file.

So if 3:2 is recorded by the camera in RAW and Lightroom forces me to view it in 1:1, is there some way to retrieve the image back to 3:2, the ratio captured by the sensor?

I've never tried this myself but I would imagine if you just reset the crop option in Lightroom that it would show you the full image.

You know, this is strange, a thread popped up not long ago with a similar question, but I don't remember who or when it was discussed! I did a search of "aspect ratio" and there were of course plenty or threads, I just don't see that particular one!

I believe the user found an answer, I just don't remember what it was, maybe someone who sees this will remember!

I know you can remove the crop in DPP, but not sure how to then get the image in to LR.
You can transfer to PS and this honours the un cropped image, so maybe its a 3 step process.
I just tried saving the un cropped .cr2 file from DPP but LR is still seeing the crop.

Interestingly DPP shows AR as 1:1 in the Exif, even if you remove the crop. This could be how LR knows about the crop.

Well now I'm really curious, I'm going to have to try this.

It's always been like this as far as I know.
I remember in the past my Canon S90 raw files would open up in the then current LR beta without any crop on it. When that version of LR became official and they had put full S90 compatibility in to it the crop areas we're then honoured and there was no going back.

So, a question: Does this issue apply to Raw, or just to jpegs?

I don't know, I don't have one of the cameras, but I do have a problem with the idea of those settings being "burned in" to the Exif so that even with Raw, Lightroom can't just ignore them...it seems like it's not just a Lightroom issue but also a Canon issue...

At any rate, this to me would be a reason to not use such settings in the camera, 'cause especially if shooting jpegs you can't go back and "do it over"!

I agree with the last statement.
If shooting raw it makes much more sense to just shoot at the full size and crop it to whatever you want afterwards.
I do feel that if you purposely select one of the other AR then that's what you would expect anyway.

Ah, thanks, Elie, you nailed it! Both the question of whether it affects the Raw and then the tool to recover!!

I found this problem too. Had to convert to DNG.
