Female pileated woodpecker preparing a meal for wee ones inside the nest.
If you have a brisk imagination, you can see ant legs sticking out of her mouth :-)

No imagination necessary Barry, that's an excellent close-up image!
Amazing that such a big bird can manage on such small fare isn't it.

Thank you for the comments. Craig sent me an edited copy with the white balance corrected and it looks much better. Thanks again, Craig!

Forgive me for venting (as I already unloaded on Craig):

I didn’t get any pictures yesterday and posted the feeding female from the previous day. The reason is that I am so mad I can’t even see straight. Our land borders National Forest and our driveway goes through a part of it. Yesterday we found some people stripping bark off cherry trees. I mean stripping it off all around as high as they could reach which of course kills the trees. I confronted them and my wife took a couple pictures. They muttered some things and tried to act intimidating with their knife. I called two Forest Service Rangers. The only reply was some lame comment about how they would contact law enforcement. Today I went to the sheriff’s dept with pictures of them. They are referring me to National Forest Law Enforcement officials but no one has contacted me yet. I have steam coming out of my ears. Poaching/killing trees runs a close second in vileness to poaching/killing birds or animals.
Taking pictures of birds is much more fun than bird brained idiots.
Ok. I feel better. Sorry about that.
