Hello I just picked up a 1dmkii and was wondering how to charge the battery. Do I just plug it into the body itself? Thanks

You remove the battery and attach it to the charger, same as any other body.

I hope yours came with a charger?

Also, the original batteries on these are coming close to the end of their life. Don;rt know if Canon even makes them anymore. Might want to see what kind of a charge you get and cosider a new 3rd party one.

Still looking for what has been called the two headed Hydra quite apt as in the mythical beast very hard to find one at a reasonable price . Must be one of those items that do not depreciate in price.

Heya,

I know this is an old thread, but I just went through this.

Finding the charger alone is super, super expensive (like $250!). Because it shares it's use with other 1D bodies.

There are third party chargers, they're just hard to find because you have to get the voltage and all that right. I got my charger by making sure I shopped an inexpensive 1D so that I basically bought a charger and got a free camera with it (1D2 in my case). I bought my 1D2 for $289 and it came with charger & battery. So ultimately you can look at it like I bought a camera and got the charger with it, or I bought the charger and got the camera with it. Whatever works. But now that I have the charger, I can use it with other 1D series to a point.

Very best,

LP4-EN battery ($165) I think will be around for quite a few years as all the 1 series cameras use it. B&H still sells the Canon charger ($365) Ouch!

1DMKII does not use LP4-EN.
NP-E3 is the pack used for 1D, 1DMkII, 1DMkII N, 1DS, 1DSMkII.

1DMKIII and 1DSMKIII were the first 1s to use LP4-EN.

Battery pack is easy, plenty of aftermarket available. Or do what I did, take 2 old packs to a battery rebuild shop
and got 2 packs rebuilt for around $120 with Sanyo Eneloop cells. professional job, spot welded and new fresh cells.

The problem is the charger.

Aftermarket chargers are available for LP4-EN so you could show a rebuilder this guide and have your NP-E3 converted to 3 cell Lithium pack and use LP4-EN charger:

I was looking for a solution to convert my NP-E3 Ni-MH battery to LION and found a converter that is designed to do just that: search on "25W 12V Voltage Regulator DC 8-12.6V to 10-14V" and you will find it. The option is then to use the 14650 LION battery that is 6.5cm long or the 14500 that is 5cm long and has the same length as a AA battery.

If you get the batteries spend a bit more money to get the protected ones which are protected against over discharge/charge.

For charging them you have to get a charger for LION cells and you can't use the standard charger.

LIONs need to be balance charged. This requires electronics, inside the battery pack or external. If external, you need 6 wires exiting the battery pack that can be connected to the balance circuit. (assuming you do use 5 cells) If you don't balance charge them (or a cell goes faulty) you have a dangerous situation and "vent with flame" is the risk. Protected cells are typically 3mm longer. As the NP-E3 has 10 cells, 5 pairs of two, end to end, if using the electronic regulator circuit above, you'll only end up with room for 5 cells, assuming they will still fit with the larger diameter due to the protected cell having a metal strip connecting the positive front of the cell to the protection circuit at the back of the cell.

Far simpler, cheaper, more reliable and to have pack rebuilt with brand new NiMh cells which have more capacity than the original Canon cells as well as have the same LSD characteristics as LION cells.

Large variation for asking prices :-)
With so many looks like it would be easy to get one at a fair price.

NIMH just has such a short life though. Frustratingly so.

My 1D3 still has the original 2008 battery, and just last week it came home from a 7100 image session at 50%.
