Im in the process of selling off my 50d.

What i have learned from my 50d is that 99% of the time i shoot in single shot mode, shooting people who are posed, flowers, scenery....basically things that arent moving . Rarely do i ever use the 6fps the 50d offers. I want better low light capabilities along with just better overall pop/iq. Both these cameras would accomplish this pretty easily.

What i like about the a7r is it has really awesome dynamic range at low isos which is quite impressive and can be semi pocketable when paired with the right lenses such as the very sharp 55 1.8. I do think the small size would encourage me to take the camera with me alot more as I many times would like to take the Canon but just dont want to lug around the weight for the whole day. I live overseas where taking public transportation is more convenient than driving your own vehicle which means that if I bring a camera with me theres a good chance I really am carrying it around all day, not just a few hrs. I also like the high mp count of the a7r.

The Canon 6d from my understanding has better controls and can choose the focus points easier. I still dont quite understand how the a7r focuses but many reports seem to say that it sometimes will focus on the background rather than the foreground. Overall from what ive read the 6d just handles better and is better at low light.

Im sure both cameras are excellent but before I get deeper into buying glass I would appreciate some input, especially from those who shoot both systems.

I have a 6d and really like it. I shoot a lot of static stuff, say landscapes and in low light and have been pleased. I've also used it to shoot my daughter's high school basketball team and it performs well there, as you know it is not a speed demon, but takes good pictures.

My vote, not that it counts, is that since you are already familiar with Canon get a 6d. Maybe rent or borrow one for the weekend and I think you'll be pleased.

The a7r paired with the zeiss 55 f1.8 will put a huge smile on your face every time you shoot with it so you know what advice I would give.

I just posted on this thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1379155 regarding a VERY similar switch.

Ask your self:
-Will the body cover all the bases you NEED as a photographer?
-Will the Sony/Zeiss full frame lens library cover my needs as a photographer?
-Is this camera system going to support my NEEDS as a photographer?
-Will any functions hold me back from doing my job?

I think ultimately, this A7 is a fantastic system. It has its downfalls but over time I'm sure things will be fixed and eventually the Sony system will be really sharp. It already is a good system, but with the current Native full frame lens library it could hold some shooters back. Also, the battery life has said to be pretty poor. Shooters who are out constantly shooting for long periods of time could be hurt by this downfall. Do some research before making your decision, otherwise the A7 could be an excellent choice!

OP - try the A7R out first before you buy one in store.

I like the camera but the battery life isn't very good and the AF is slow with their native lenses (I have the 35mm 2.8).

I also have the metabones adapter that has AF for canon lenses and it's slower than my 5D3 in Liveview mode so I use my lenses as MF lenses which works well for me since there is focus peaking and magnification features on the A7R (and I shoot leica so I'm used to MF).

The current lens line up for the sony is very limited if you're looking for A7R native lenses. The 35mm and 55mm are probably the best as reviews for their zooms are not very impressive. Cost is not very low either.

I like the size of the Sony and also the EVF is quite impressive. Great walk around camera but I still go for my 5D3 when I need the speed of AF and frame rate.

Whilst I would love to say Sony for the same reasons you stated above, I recently was faced with an upgrade and went Fuji. I am not advocating the Fuji system to you, but the reason I ducked Sony was the lens choice. In your position, if I knew a particular native lens was good for me then great, if MF is ok to you then great.
Otherwise, as you have 2 very good lens,I would get a used 6D and watch the Sony lens release's, and upgrade to Sony later which has the superior sensor. ( I have held/tried the Sony, it felt awesome to me )

Currently I pretty much have no interest in the long range. My favorite lens being the 24-70 range and later I want to add the 70-200. I think this will cover most of what i want to shoot. So I think I could wait for sony to build up its lenses. The 6d does offer a good cost advantage to me and I could add the 70-200is ii. If the iq is similar between the 2 then maybe I will just stick with Canon, else the size factor and the idea of being able to fit a camera in my coat pocket (a7r+55) makes it very tempting. Hence the conundrum

I tried holding a A7r in the store and I found it painful within about a minute, the grip is so tiny and the zoom lenses are DSLR sized, the ergonomics are worse than a rebel. How are people supposed to use these over hours of shooting? I guess it would be ok as a landscape camera on a tripod with that 36MP sensor.

Well i went with the 6d and my 50d is sold. It wasnt an easy decision nor am I sure this will be what im looking for in a camera. Theres definitely some things that I like and some things that I dislike, such as the af system,dr and MP. But what it really came down to was price and the 6d was just the cheapest upgrade option with the least amount of hassle. In the end the Nikon d610 and d800 along with the a7r were all contenders. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised by the 6d and by what Canon has in the future. Its not like the 6d is a bad camera, far from it im sure. So even though i cant test it against the other models I certainly can test it to whether I feel this was a good upgrade. Hopefully I will be out shooting with it in the next day or so:D
