Though by no means uncommon, and perhaps I haven't been applying myself, but the one and only sora I have ever seen was forty years ago! That is, until yesterday when I was within 10-20 feet of two of them for perhaps 20 minutes. Getting a good shot through a tangle of dead weeds was no mean feat, however. My salvation was that one of them stood more or less still for several minutes while it preened, allowing me to slowly edge closer to get a clearer shot. Most of the hundreds of frames I shot are junk, but I got what I wanted in a few.
