Taking flight

Photographing a pileated woodpecker entering the nest is one thing—they do so slowly and cautiously. Another challenge is to capture one leaving—this they do with a furious speed.
While far from being a good capture, this is the best I’ve been able to get so far. At least you can see the showy white underwing.

Apologies again for the poor quality but for me this is like getting an image of Bigfoot.

That does not look easy at all. You definitely need some really good light so you can use a very fast SS or definitely try some flash.

I too admire your efforts in bringing us the saga of your local Pileateds. It's easy to tell you're having fun too.....we're all behind ya 100%!

Keep trying, Barry, I know you will! You have already done the hardest part, and that was finding their nest.
