My friend and I just did a graduation photo shoot, and I gave him my memory card as he is going to edit the pictures. He is the Pro, I was his helper.

He shoots a 5Dc and uses CS2 to edit pics. I shoot a 7D. When he got my photos into CS2 the software would not read them.

Turns out that he was happy with his program and had never done updates to his CS2. He has never used Lightroom, but he is considering buying it.

My question is if he does do the upgrades available from Adobe, will it allow his CS2 to edit 7D photos? The upgrade I am looking at is version 9.0.2. Can anyone tell me if this will open it up to 7D raws?

You may be able to work around the problem by converting the files to DNG format first, via Adobe's converter (http://www.adobe.com …duct=106&platform=Windows (external link)).

I don't recall the specific numbers, but the way I remember it you need to install the latest Adobe Camera Raw.

Here's the rub;
I do not think that it is infinitely backwards compatible. CS2 is too old, as it is "Unsupported" by Adobe.

I'm not sure which version you need to open a 7D file, nor which version was the cut off.

If there is a combo that would work for both CS2 and 7D, Adobe has every version still posted for DL.

Here's the DL page anyway;

P.S. it looks like version 3.7 was the last compatible with CS2.

This also looks to predate the 7D.

The last ACR update for CS2 was 3.7. Support for the 7D was introduced in 5.6 which requires CS4. The only option is to convert to DNG like Patrick mentioned or use DPP.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
So looks like CS2 will not be fixed for 7D. I think he would be better off to buy Lightroom 5. I don't think he is going to upgrade his 5Dc since he is mostly retired and winding down in Photography (over 1000 weddings in his carrier).
So the CS2 will do everything he needs unless I do more work for him.
In that case Lightroom will work. If he gets LR he will probably like it so much he may do all his editing there except when detailed editing is needed.

Or, just use the free Canon DPP (or another converter) for RAW conversion, and then open converted .tif in CS2.

This is how I operate.

Are you saying you can open RAW files in CS2 ACR from your 60D without converting to DNG? What version of ACR are you using?

Are you talking Raw (CR2) files or jpegs?

Well, that makes sense, since you can open the jpegs in, well, any image editing program, heck, even in Windows Paint:)!

Maybe it is time for your friend to consider upgrading to CS6 or CC. The difference compared to CS2 is immense. Whenever Adobe released a major upgrade, they no longer supported the previous version for new model cameras. As mentioned DNG Converter can be used to make the raw files readable, but you still are limited to the outdated capabilities of CS2. Even CS3 with the latest version of Camera Raw that it supports is a major improvement over CS2.
