How can I get the white to not blow out. It was overcast and quite bright outside, with the silver train it was hard to get a shot.

Pretty harse lighting in these shots. A lot of shadows with detail lost. I like the barn/silo shot best. You have used the tree as a nice frame (partial). Although a little re-framing to get the whole barn/silo would help.

As for the train- the train is well exposed and the resulting blown out details are unavoidable. (If you expose for the lighter section, the lower train will be too dark). You can use the Shadow/highlight tool in PS- that might help.

I used the dodge/burn tool and got nothing, it was just lost. I've been doing a series of barns. Most of the local farmers are going out of business so I'm trying to capture them before they sell off to houseing devlopments. This one has posted signs and a huge no tresspassing sign all over. So I could only take it from the road. But i'll try moving around a bit more once the snow is gone and the skies are blue again! I'm having a heck of a time photographing anything with these winter skies!

Thanks for the advice!

Are you familiar with digital blending techniques, such as those discussed at http://www.luminous-landscape.com …s/blended_exposures.shtml (external link) (among other places)? It looks like some of your photos would benefit from such Photoshop manipulation.

Next time, put the camera on a tripod, take one shot about 2 1/2 stops over, and another about 2 1/2 stops under, then blend them. See if the results are to your liking.

Interesting! I going to have to try this soon. I'm so used to shooting with slide film digital is proving to be tricky, that article explains why.
