Hello all,

I now have some money to spend and I'd like some advice. Been interested in Macro for a while, but not had a lens. If I am possibly going to go into macro long term, I need to dip a toe so to speak. The dogs dangly bits would be something like an MPE 65mm focus rails ring flash etc, but hey no lottery this week.

Can any kind soul (who has one) post some results they have from using a 100mm Macro not a bad price at the moment? just so I can see what might be achieved?

Interested in bugs (colourful ones - butterflies etc, yes I know they don't sit still long) flowers, plants and such.

Canon EOS5d MKII user.

Heya,

You don't need much fancy to do macro. The lens helps, but the real difference you see in macro is the lighting. If you have a flash, you're set. If you don't, you need one. You can get a real macro lens. Or you can just make any lens into a macro capable lens. You still need lots of light though.

For example, I used a $40 old manual lens from Russia (Helios 44-2), with $15 extension tubes (no electronics involved, cheap Fotodiox metal tube extension rings. I used 21mm of extension rings on this 58mm lens. Mounted a flash with a diffuser. Here's the results:

Versus, my actual macro lens (180mm Tamron F3.5 Macro) with diffused flash:

Thanks CollegeKid, I looked at calicokats shot, nice, but I'd like to see more examples. I did follow the link to their website, some great macro shots in a gallery of 38 pics but it does not say what they were shot with.

College kid linked you the photo sample thread for this lens. I am not sure you will find more photo's taken with it in any other spot. it might help to start at the last page and work your way back. thay way you filter out all of the accounts that have been deleted or deleted host sites making it so you can't see the pictures. there should be thousands of pictures in that thread

Thanks, mine1. I didn't understand why a thread with 4000+ posts in it, devoted to one lens, was not enough. Or why he only looked at one post. Got it now.
