Thanks everybody for the nice comments. It's just that birds are my usual suspects. It's why I photograph at all, and this thread is not for that really I think but to do something different, something outside one's comfort zone etc. Hence the slight embarrassment.

Anyway,

Stina, those are nice! I'm curious. When you say you work with the pigs, what does that mean exactly? Are you teaching them tricks, like sit up nice, give a paw? :D I really have no idea!

Levina, it's unanimous, your birds aren't boring.

Stina, that pig has a sweet expression. It looks so attentive. Are you sure it has to go to the fair?

Here is a YouTube link that sows champion pigs in the show ring.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZImmpJhRb8 (external link)

They show twice in front of a judge. They have a showmanship class were the kids are judged on how well they handle the pigs and then a market class where the pig is judged based on structure, soundness and fat vs muscle. You need to walk your pigs around and keep them in view of the judge, never getting between your pig and the judge. You work with the pig to build up their stamina so they can keep walking in the arena without getting tired and so they are easy to control.
At the end of fair we have an auction where people come and buy the pigs. Some sell for breeding and some sell for meat.
You could teach them to sit and do other things, but that would make them seem more like a pet and make it even harder when they sell. It can be sad when they sell but it's a great learning experience and a lot of these kids grow up and work in the agriculture field.

They can be sweet and it can be sad on auction day. We would be lucky if someone wanted to keep her for breeding but we can't keep them. We just take pride in the fact that they have a better life than other pigs before going to slaughter. I don't go back to the barn after they sell, way too sad! :(

That video makes me think the most useful thing to teach a show pig would be to not sit. Keep moving.

In high school, I knew kids in 4-H who lived on ranches. Typically, their projects were calves. They felt awful at the end of the season when you-know-what happened. In a sense, they'd lost their best friend. The mood improved after a week or so.

Hey, I empathize, but the "theme" was "Show Us" (what you're up to).

So, you were up to chasing the birds around, you got a good shot and you Showed Us!

'Course, if a theme came up for, say, "Food On The Table", well, hey, run out and capture one of those critters, cook it up and show us, and I doubt that anyone would be bored:)!

In the meantime, keep shooting those birds (photographing, not chasing meals)! :)

Yeah, you're right, Tony (no longer Long ... winded!!! :D ). But to suggest that I shoot a bird, cook it, show it to you and, presumably eat it, is something you really REALLY cannot say to me...

Anyway, where is Richard this week??? I hope he's all right.

I agree with you Levina. Apparently Tony's meds have worn off, or maybe he forgot to take them.:(

Thank you for the thought Levina. Still here, but was totally distracted with work all last week, then just when I was about to spend the weekend on photographic matters I had occasion to go up on to the roof and discovered that the wooden tank-stand under the header tank for our was about to disintegrate with rot...so spent a fair bit of the weekend building a new one. Not very elegant, but unlike the original the timber is treated and also painted with Metalex, and also, the joints are housed and bolted...not just strap nailed together.

Great topic for this week...will try and do better. Thank you again for asking.
