I'm looking for ultra wide angle lens, I need one desperately, I love the idea of being able to have a UWA at 8mm, but the 2.8 aperture on the Tokina is also very attractive. I know for a lot of landscapes and I'll rarely use 2.8 but it's a nice benefit for video. Anyone have an experience with both lenses? Shooting with a 60D and for pictures I mainly do event shooting, in door and out door party's.

The question is do you really need 11mm @ f2.8?

You have the sigma 18-35 so you already have an amazing lowlight lens. For event photography f2.8 would be handy for wide event space shots but at the se time 8mm is fairly wider for those shots (but also fairly slower as well.

It's a tough call. I have the tokina 11-16 and often wonder if I should sell it and get the sigma 8-16 instead since I don't find myself needing 11mm @ f2.8 (I also own the sigma 18-35). Fast and wide is nice for night shots and star shots but even then I have the 18-35 (which is 1 1/3 stops faster anyways) and don't always need 11mm

Yeah that's the ultimate dilemma, the 8mm on the wide end is a huge plus, but it is alot slower at 4.5, but for video 2.8 will come in handy, as well as those late night shots. My friend owns a Nikon and the 12-24 (I believe her's is the f/4) and that lens is awesome, which is why I'm leaning towards the Sigma

No flare...

I think I'll ultimately end up going with my gut feeling and grab the Sigma

Ok! Here is a bonus for you:

Keep in mind that filters for this lens are more expensive than the lens! If you want to go the filter route, your best bet is the EF-S 10-22. But you can't beat the 8 mm end!

Heya,

Don't take the Tokina into an event with lights. The flare will roll you over. I say that as someone who uses the Tokina a lot for landscape and wide field astro (I had to have F2.8, no choice there).

If I were looking for a lens for ultrawide, especially video, I'd look into:

Sigma 8-16
Canon 10-18 STM

Very best,

I have no experience with the Sigma. I sued to have the 11-16 Mk I and it was a great lens minus the flare (which I found unacceptable). I ended up going the EF-S 10-22. I loved that lens and only got rid of it because of incompatibility with my 5d.

Now Im confused, I don't need to purchase the lens today which is good so that gives me time, maybe i'll rent and check them both out. I use to have the Canon 10-22 briefly but it didn't get much use, however my style has developed a bit more since then.

I don't have experience with either the Sigma or Tokina but the Canon 10-22 refurb can be had for $395 right now (back in stock). Love mine, but don't shoot video.

The Canon EFS 10-22 is somewhat less expensive new and takes filters.

The Sigma 8-16 has 8 mm and if you insist on filters, you will end up spending more than the lens.

Here is the difference between 8 and 10 mm. Both shots done with tripod, from the same spot.

8mm

10 mm

To appreciate the UWA, here is the 'normal' 50 mm view:
