Interesting expression, but I have to press the "Not Liked" button on that one.

There seems to be a reddish fringing on him where shadow meets highlight. possibly an artifact from PP?

Too contrasty; blown highlights; cheek looks like a plowed field; pink hair...

I even find some posterisation in the image. As others have stated: overcooked.

Here, he has the "ghost story" lighting coming from below, which is not good. You would have to bring in a more powerful light source from higher above him as your main light and use this lighting to fill in shadows. Nevertheless I like the nice focus on his eyes and he seems genuinely happy. A few more points to think about: You are shooting from slightly below, with light coming from below, and with a 50mm up close also getting some distortion resulting in his nose and lips looking disproportionately big. The shorter the lens distance the less appropriate it is for close up portrait shots because there is going to be a high degree of distortion. You want a longer lens, like 70mm+, for headshots. You can correct some of it in post and also increasing the distamce between you and the subject will reduce the distortion. So back up and try including more of him, and try vertical orientation. Also, I'm not sure what aperture you're shooting at but his ears are thrown out of focus because of the thin plane of focus, and this type of styling is generally reserved for women and children if used. However if you back up then more of him will be in focus so you don't necessarily need to increase aperture by a lot.

With all that said, I think with a few tweaks here and there you'll be well on your way! :-)

Yep that sums it up well. The exposure appears to be way off.
