Do you mean a greater DOF?

I think this is a great picture. I love the little dimple.

How did you light it?

I too would go for just a little more DOF.

Greater DOF or focus on the eyes.

As is, the focus is on the front of her hair leaving the "face/eyes" soft...

Cheers, Don

I can understand the objection to the shallow dof - I was able to get my flash connected by radio so this was new territory for me because I wasn't restricted by angles. So I was able to go all the way out to 100 on my lens, but forgot to adjust the aperture to make up for the increased distance. It's just a matter of style.

But in any case I have to disagree with you on this - her eyes are tack sharp, not focused on the front of her hair. You can also tell because her lips and teeth (on the same focal plane) are also in focus.

One of the things I found a long time ago is that it is possible, very often, when someone has brown eyes for them not to look sharp even if they are - I think this is the case with this picture - along with other things happening that make you think that they aren't sharp.

The thin DoF in this picture, highlights what is very sharp, the hair, and not sharp (back of head and shirt) but also when you add silky smooth perfect child skin (almost looks soft) with brown eyes (in this case looks soft even though they aren't) and you get the comments that were given. When I have faced similar situations (Asian wedding pictures with brown eyes) I often over sharpen the eyes of the bride to try and create the perception of sharpness (where it already exists but doesn't look it)

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

60" parabolic reflective umbrella to my left, Nikon sb 5000 speed light. Angled more severely and dark ambient light to get the shadows.

I can "KINDA" see what he is saying. The eyelashes look tack sharp but the actual irises look like the focus is dropping off already... but I don't really see that as an issue because sometimes I pass pictures that have sharp eyelashes where the focus drops off a little on the eyes... maybe it is the matte finish that emphasizes it a bit.. because contrast helps makes things appear sharper and matte makes focus appear softer. Still a very cute photo nonetheless!
