itsallart... thank you for great tip... I sure appreciate it... I will definitely try this next time.

Would you mind if I post some questions to you from time to time to get your insights/ recommendations?

Joe

Joe, I'm not an expert but I shoot with fast prime lenses and if I can help you, I will. Sure, ask questions; I'm sure that others will give you some ideas and tips too.
I posted a picture of a little girl I shot a while ago just to show you how you focus on the eye closer to the viewer :) Not the greatest shot but seems appropriate for this purpose :)

Hello itsallart... thanks for the feedback. You are absolutely right, I have to do a better job of this. I'm just getting use to the new prime lens and I guess I didn't anticipate that it doesn't focus as fast as the other lens I have...

Still learning... but again thank you for the feedback. I think this might be a little better...

50/1.4 works best in my opinion stopped down a bit, I use f2.5 a lot and like how it looks, just up the ISO as needed. f1.4 works but is not so sharp with that lens, and in bright light stopping down a bit helps "clarify" the look. Same goes for 85/1.2L - it really works wonders wide open in less light, else you have to stop it down a bit.

PS. are you perhaps trying to get your daughter to smile too long for comfort while you shoot - the smile looks a bit "forced/tired" and I know she has a lovely natural smile from the photo you took:

With portraits one must remember to keep subject comfortable and relaxed, it's not very fun to sit there while you have all the fun with apertures, lenses and such. :)

Selfie Time. Touched it up a little bit, will look at it again in the morning. C&C welcome. I tried to do a pseudo Peter Hurley lighting setup, so the catchlights might look weird. Had socked beauty dish at top, two gridded strip boxes on each side and white foamboard below.

At 1/250 you should have been okay with motion. You did shoot at 1.4 and that distance your DOF is pretty small. Focus and recompose is difficult with fast primes. You may want to try using your outside focus points.

Thanks Pekka... much appreciate the suggestions. I'm definitely still struggling to balance my settings and yes, I do have to make sure that she's comfortable on the shots...
