Thanks for the comments and tips. Both were shot with 24-105 on my 7d2 (I saw the focus issue as well and on my sports shots and have since returned the body as it was in the 30 day window...) Used a soft box about 45 degrees to her stance and about 45 degress above her, probably 5 ft away with canon ex430II fired into it along with an on camera flash bounced. So how best would I position her or lights next time?

Turn her body AWAY from the light by 65-80°, then have her turn her head to face the lens, or even face into the light a bit. Voila: light across the garment and short lighting in two moves.

I love this image. The lighting is spot on if you want to have a two dimensional image look three dimensional.

One of my favorite headshots from back in the summer. She's an absolute joy to work with. The shot itself may not be the best from a technical standpoint, but somehow I fell in love with it.

That's a beautiful shot, what did you think the technical faults were?

The subject's pose in #1 makes for a more flattering photo (too bad the eyes seem soft [although maybe it's my own, I'm due for new spectacles]). The rule (oh my, there's that four letter word again) for women is to have the main light going across the garment; having them face the main light widens them. Likewise for broad lighting (which you are using in #2): it widens the face, whereas short lighting (which you used in #1) slims it.

Yep, don't broad light a broad. ;)

Can you get that light closer to her? What power were you using on your flash?

You're shooting at ISO 3200 and there's noticeable grain. I would try to get the light a little closer (larger light source = softer) and bump up the power so you can bring the ISO way down.

I actually don't even remember. But originally I thought I had some technical issues somewhere with it. I guess if I could redo this, I would've had her remove the strap. Would've made it look even better for me somehow.
