This would be sweet. I'm happy enough with the 85 1.8, that I don't feel really compelled to spend the money on the 85L...but if an 85 ART could split the difference, that might be pretty compelling. ;)

it's got some stiff competition.... the 85L does 1.2, and the 85 1.8 is extremely fast to focus with fairly good IQ. It'll be like the current sigma 85, or a little higher for the art features. It's not touching the 85L, regardless of how sharp it is.

At $369 US for the 85 1.8 and $2199 for the 85L (BH Photo prices sans rebate)...I think Sigma has a little room to play with the price point.

I have the sig50Art and sig35Art. I have to keep at least one Canon prime and that will be the 85L

If it's on par with the 35 / 50 art (in performance and price) then I'll definitely be picking this one up

Same here, if the Sigma 85 art renders like the 35 and 50.

I love the 35art, but I still find myself using the current sig85 much more often. If the 85art is even better... I dunno. The current sig85 is already sharper than the 85L and focuses much faster.

that's pretty much why I see no market for the Art version. The S85 is probably the best prime sigma made prior to their revamp. Maybe they'll discontinue it for $400, then I'll pick one up :p

the current Canon 85's are pretty nice, but it would be interesting to see what Sigma comes up with. My guess is the CA wide open will be much better than anything Canon has out currently.

Not sure how can they improve from their current Sigma 85, it's already as sharp as the 85L F/1.2 @ F/1.4, perhaps a bit sharper than the L. I guess they could improve the built and add a better coating for flare resistance.

Bingo. I'm guessing they'll charge $1099. And if they do, they'll not only "touch" the big Canon, they'll have their way with it.

Oh, and it might motivate Canon to get off their duff and update the 85 f1.8 and give it the same treatment as the 24 and the 35 IS's. They'll ask $700. for that one and that might be attractive.

There is a lot of room In between Canon's 85's. Plus I feel my copy of the 1.8 is below average compared to most 85/1.8s. If Sigma can deliver a fast focusing 1.4 here as sharp as the 1.2L now without the 1.2 kick for $1000 or so, I'm game.

However, the year of the lens thing is still very weak from Canon even with their two UWA offerings that just came out. Maybe they can release a 50/1.4 IS, 85/1.8 IS plus a 35L II and a 135/2 IS around Photokina and make this a party.

I'd be happy with the current sigma 85 just getting the USB Dock treatment!!!
