it's got some stiff competition.... the 85L does 1.2, and the 85 1.8 is extremely fast to focus with fairly good IQ. It'll be like the current sigma 85, or a little higher for the art features. It's not touching the 85L, regardless of how sharp it is.

There's also the Rokinon 85mm which performs pretty much just as well for $250 ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if this new Art 85mm is the same optical formula as their current one with a bit more refinement and the new barrel design/dock implementation, much like their 30mm Art.

while i agree the current sigma 85 is a fantastic lens as is, i do still see room for improvement, i personally feel the 35 and 50 art to be just that little bit sharper wide open, as well the sigma 85 does render oof area just bit busier compared to the other 85's and of course having that dock compatibility would be gravy

How cool would it be if Sigma could surprise absolutely everybody with 85 f/1.2 Art!

it would be! then we can have a real head to head with the 85L II lol!

but i don't think they will, isn't there something about Nikon bodies not able to AF with f/1.2 lenses? they are not going to make both a 1.2 and 1.4 just to cater the 2 camps

Not sure how can they improve from their current Sigma 85, it's already as sharp as the 85L F/1.2 @ F/1.4, perhaps a bit sharper than the L. I guess they could improve the built and add a better coating for flare resistance.

Exactly... mine is amazing!

drzenitram wrote in post #16938882 (external link)
I love the 35art, but I still find myself using the current sig85 much more often. If the 85art is even better... I dunno. The current sig85 is already sharper than the 85L and focuses much faster.

Yup... compared to my buddies 85L it's just as good with the Canon only edging out in the colors/bokeh. But the Sig85 is half the price!

FEChariot wrote in post #16939021 (external link)
There is a lot of room In between Canon's 85's. Plus I feel my copy of the 1.8 is below average compared to most 85/1.8s. If Sigma can deliver a fast focusing 1.4 here as sharp as the 1.2L now without the 1.2 kick for $1000 or so, I'm game.

However, the year of the lens thing is still very weak from Canon even with their two UWA offerings that just came out. Maybe they can release a 50/1.4 IS, 85/1.8 IS plus a 35L II and a 135/2 IS around Photokina and make this a party.

You really need to try the Sig85. It's become my main lens. I take shots 75% of the time with this lens and the rest is spread evenly across my other lenses.

They will keep the same optical formula maybe add some new coatings for CA control. But I agree that they will introduce it with the awesome build of the 35/50 with dock compatibility and more than likely it will price around 900-1,000. Ultimately will lower the price of the current sig85.

I need to sell mine now because I will definitively buy the new 85 art.

I don't understand people's obsession with sharpness. The current Sigma 85mm is plenty sharp for pretty much anyone's needs, it'd be a much bigger deal if they fixed the AF issues.

I wouldn't, not when the 135L can be had for under $900. Just because something a better comes out doesn't mean the old king is nullified. OS would be nice, but I'd be surprised if Sigma included it. The L is a legendary lens, it'd take a lot to sway most people away from it.

Yet the reason I don't own the 135L anymore is because it's effectively 2 1/3+ stops slower than my Sigma 85. I can handhold the s85 @ 1/60 and get handshake-free shots all day long, but I could never trust the 135L under 1/160 or 1/200. If sigma were to release a 135 1.8 with OS it would absolutely, positively be infinitely more attractive to me than the 135L.

Also... no AF issues with my 2 copies of the s85 ;-)a
