Sigma 85 Art?

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I shoot at 1/125s no problem with my 135/2.8.

This, this, this! I loved my 135L and shot a whole lot with it (nearly exclusively at times) for the couple years I had it. This being said, my best shots were at SS's of >1/500th. When trying to use flash for fill blended with ambient at max sync speed (1/200th) it was tough. I loved the lens, but it was ultimately was sold. If sigma put out even a 135 2.0 with OS, I would be all over it. The OS would really broaden the utility of this FL.

With regard to the 85mm, I would love an "art". If I had to live with only one FL, it would be 85mm. I love my 85 1.8 and will never be able to afford the 'L'. I tried a sigma for a weekend, wasn't blown away, sold it after only two days. Looking back on the files, I think it had focus issues with my body. Given the mixed feelings about this lens in the photog community, I will just hold out for and be thrilled when the art version arrives.

So 1/60" which is better than the 1/fl thumbrule from there: 1/125" is one stop. If you are steady enough to hold 1/60" @ 85mm then you should do no worse at 1/125" at 135 mm.

Another surprise would be Canon coming out with an 85 1.4 ($700-$1000), it is Canon's year of the lenses .

In theory, yes. I think it had something to do with the balance of the lenses on my 5d2, maybe. The 135L was more awkward. Sadly, I did much worse at anything slower than 1/200. The lens is just oddly balanced.

Odd. I don't have the sigma and I'm on crop, but with my 85/1.8 and 135/2, I use them both at the closest stop over the 1/fl * crop thumbrule (1/160" and 1/250") with equal success in keepers with respect to camera shake.

You can have one AND the other. I expect a new 85 Art to address both.

I wouldn't, not when the 135L can be had for under $900. Just because something a better comes out doesn't mean the old king is nullified. OS would be nice, but I'd be surprised if Sigma included it. The L is a legendary lens, it'd take a lot to sway most people away from it.

For me it will be the build quality, the feel of the lens, the look, the beauty, the dock compatibility, etc.

I'd buy it even if the optics stayed the same. I just love the art prime lenses.

i just ordered the 85II, so of course this had to happen....
but
the one thing that I was always worried about the sigma 85 was the color rendition (i like the colors from canon more than those of sigma), but also that I wanted it to work with the USB hub. If they keep everything the same but just add the ability to use the hub (which I am sure that they will something better in addition to that) I would have looked at it more seriously. Oh well. I guess I will just have to "settle" for the canon 85 1.2 II that I already ordered

any new rumors? waiting to see price to see if I should pick up a good used copy of the current sigma 85 or save for the art.

The only 85mm I have read about lately is the 85mm Otus

You can find a good copy for 700-750. I paid a premium and spent 750 on mine but it was from a trusted member and was a 0mfa perfect copy and it is. Flawless so it was worth paying on the higher end for me.

Sigma rumors is essentially releasing a 24 1.4 and 135 1.8 OS before the 85 art.

Their current 85 art is damn good so I don't see them updating that right away but who knows.

This thread title gets me excited every time somebody bumps it.

It's not an ART version, for the moment... the ART version could be announced during the photokina (beginning on September 16th).

Looks promising, given Sigma's recent record with primes.

Hoping for a 24mm and 14mm next - with Sigma's nine-bladed aperture, of course (even numbers of blades kill off any scene that produces sunstars). And some tilt-shifts, too.

Also hope Zeiss releases Otus lenses for all these focal lengths...
