Are the preset files the same in ACR as in LR?

Do they share the same folder for these or do they need to be duplicated?

No, they are formatted differently and LR presets can't be used directly in ACR. There are conversion apps, however.

I had to check on that. I don't use presets in PS, only LR. I only installed presets in LR but I recalled seeing them in PS. I just opened a RAW file and all the presets I have in LR are in ACR. I can't explain it as I did nothing special to make this work. When I was setting up custom camera profiles I noticed if I did this in LR it applied them was automatically to CS6 and vice versa.

You're mistaken and Elie is correct. Lightroom presets will not work in ACR and vice versa.

If you edit a raw file in Lightroom and then open it in ACR of course the edits will transfer since both Lightroom and ACR can read and interpret the XMP metadata which contains the editing instructions. However you cannot install ACR presets in Lightroom (well, you can try but they wouldn't work) nor can you install Lightroom presets in ACR.

Regarding camera presets; that's a different matter. Camera presets are installed twice if the installer(s) detect you have both ACR/Photoshop and Lightroom programs installed.
In Windows those locations are C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.4\Resources\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standard for Lightroom and C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Adobe Standard for ACR/Photoshop.

In the same vein both applications share other common features like they both access the same file cache. For example if you change the location of the raw cache in Lightroom's preferences, you will also see the location change in ACR.

You are right. ACR presets are different than LR at a closer look.

Interesting! Since I rarely use Camera Raw, I have no clue as to the details...

I have CS5, and did check the Presets tab, and no presets showed up, has this changed, or is just necessary to create (or install) new presets?

I'm curious as to what digital paradise saw, and how those presets got there!...?

I think part of the problem is the frequently seen confusion between "preset" and "profile". Develop presets are collections of slider configurations that allow the setting of multiple develop parameters to predetermined values quickly. Profiles are either abstract and mathematical or device profiles that describe the specific device's reactions to various colors, curves that compensate for the device's deviations from accuracy and sometimes curves that intentionally falsify that compensation (as in Landscape or Portrait profiles). Even people who know very well the difference between a preset and a profile sometimes let a mistake slip by, as in P. M.'s post above "Regarding camera presets; that's a different matter. Camera presets are installed twice if the installer(s) detect you have both ACR/Photoshop and Lightroom programs installed." Too bad that both words start with "P". DPP avoids confusion by using "recipes" and Picture Styles".

Sorry for late reply. The ones in ACR all start with WOW and then the preset name. They are free ones from on onOne. I just checked onOne perfect presets Vol 2 in LR and the all start with WOW as well and have same names. Antique, Edge, Glow, etc. Either I installed them while I was at the site or it did it automatically when I downloaded for LR. I can't remember. I know I did not purposely go looking for ACR presets as I don't use them in PS.

LR is on the left. First 3 in ACR are my own custom ones I don't use any longer.
