One of the largest dragonflies I've seen in a long time, but sure is good looking. Best ID I can find suggests it to be of the genus Macromia commonly called a River Cruiser. Just showed up yesterday as I sat waiting for some hummingbirds.

I wasn't sure exactly where to put this since there is no "Insect" board other than possibly the "Macro" board. It was definitely not photographed in macro mode at a distance of 5M :)

Great shot! Love the colors and the wing detail, especially for not being macro.

What equipment did you use for this shot if you don't mind.

Here's a little closer crop of head, thorax, and wings.

Always appreciated Trevor. I think that one shows the body better and I wish I had thought to follow your hawk stack lead for the 2nd.

Thank you much madjack! Some on this forum might consider it sacrilegious, but it was my Nikon D800 and 400mm 2.8ED + 1.4TCII.

Haha thanks Jeff! I think your bear still has him beat, but he was a good 3-4 inches long. Down here any bugeater is fine by me. :)

Some great shots, I too like the details shown in the wings. The light is very nice too.

Haha Steve, light that's good for hummers seems to work fine for dragonflies too.
Thanks for stopping by with a nice comment.

Nicely done Steve, you caught the delicateness of the wings, and the detail of the veining in the wings, very well.

Thanks so much as always for the generous comment Ian. I'd have to use a statement attributable to LVMoose on the Bird board...."I just pointed the camera and clicked the little button thingy" :)
