580EX vs 430EX Advantages?

Hi,

I have a 20D and just got the 10-22mm EF-S lens. I realized that the onboard flash doesn't go wide enough to fill the entire picture, but I'll find out once the lens arrives(tomorrow)

Now that I know this, I'm looking to buy an external flash, and I'm stuck between buying the 430EX or the 580EX. I've been looking online a ton for info on these flashes, but havent come to a decision yet. Money isn't really a factor, but saving a few bucks wouldnt kill me

I shoot a lot of bands and skateboarding/BMX, and a fast flash is a must. How much faster of recycle times does the 580 have? I want as fast FPS as I can get with flash, and I know that it will be slower than without flash. Im also contemplating getting the battery pack for even faster recycle times, but I'm not sure if that is neccesary.

If I am to shoot at a lower power flash, not as high powered as it can go, how fast of recycle times will each flash give me?

I forget the numbers, but if you flash more often than the manual says to you'll burn out your flash tube. You'll want an external battery pack if you try it, like the CP-E3, which works quite well. If you want lots of rapid flashes get studio lighting, which is built for it. You can forget flashes per second, and go more for seconds per flash, even though if set up right you might be ok doing more than one flash per second.

For bands i'd not use flash at all, in case they start throwing things at you for blinding and distracting them. You also lose the lighting they've carefully set up. Read this. Then again if you've done a lot of it and you're good at it who am I to tell you what to do.

I would tend towards a faster lens rather than flash for the applications you're describing

Connor, what gear do you have? I shoot events, some in the dark, and I have great lenses that seem to really do the trick. Instead of buying a new flash, maybe invest in a 85 1.8? It's not that much more money.
