Hey, I'm posting this in the Lounge, because it's not about photography, but it definitely ties in to POTN!

I've been using computers for, well, a lot of years. When I was young, I had a typewriter, but never learned to type, but as I went into a career in the tech industry, and increasingly into computer programming, I realize that doing the "two finger" keyboard thing was not going to work, so I set out to learn to type, using some software, and though there were some things I didn't really nail (such as "touch-typing" the top row of numbers and symbols), I did get to the point where I was typing at about 50 words a minute, not bad!

And then, as computer technology and applications moved forward, especially as Windows and Windows apps became widespread, I became over time aware that keyboard "shortcuts" could be a very nice time-saver, and so over the years I've incorporated ones that at least were common to me and my workflow!

But, some things keep popping up, I have to laugh (or at least chuckle) to myself!

As to typing, well, typos happen, I do my best to scan a post (or an email), but funny, sometimes I don't notice until some time later when someone "quotes" me and I see a typo, grit my teeth, correct my original post, then move on, hoping to improve for the next time! But heck, even in typing this I've gotten the occasional typos!:)

And then a couple things have popped up: I have occasionally been guilty of, say, typing "there" instead of "they're" or "their", or the occasional misspelling of a word when I should know better, just getting things mixed up there, but then once in a while I've actually meant to type something but have ended up totally typing something different, a word, just not the right word! Embarrassing when I put something like that out, but still I gotta chuckle!

And then, for the past number of months, I've been staying in a room and, with stuff going on, I a lot of time don't think to turn lights on, so as it gets later, and darker, my keyboard which is on a lowered tray gets darker...but, since I'm used to touch typing, I can be OK for a while, but then, sometimes those fingers get mixed up and I can't see at a glance that typing, say, "pretty woman", well I look up at the monitor and I'm skewered, "[tryyu ep,sm", heh, I have to stop, look down in the dim light, and realize that instead of having my fingers positioned properly, they have move one key over and typing the result! Dang! Gotta chuckle at myself, otherwise I'd go crazy!

And then, one more thing that has come up over the past few months. Shortcuts, like I say, are nice and convenient, although they can be easy to forget, nutsy when that happens, but one shortcut that here in POTN I've remembered and used a bunch has been the shortcut to submit a post (Alt-s). Well, something seems to have changed, either in POTN or in my browser, or just my "short term memory loss". The scenario is that I would post something then decide I wanted to edit, maybe just a typo, but at other times, something more "Long...winded", such as what I'm typing here now. Now I at least thought that with Alt-s the edit would be Saved, but instead, a window pops up, telling me that my post is "too short", and everything that I've typed will have disappeared, gone into the ether! Maybe 5 minutes of typing, maybe 10 or 15, who knows, except if that bit is important to me I have to start all over, type it out, and then remember to click "Save"!

Well, enough about me, but some times I do crack myself up (and yes, I've had some typos but hopefully corrected them on the spot!) :) !!

Always remember that computers are tools of the Devil!

You want proof? Just consider how often they cause you to speak strongly to the Lord!

Heh! Thanks Rog, it's time to "cuss like a sailor"!:)

A couple other shortcuts that seem to have been "mislaid":

Ctl-i for italicizing which I use fairly often

Ctl-b for bold, not so much, but still...

And and then, one I believe was there, but I could be wrong, 'cause I rarely use it,

Ctl-u for underlining

Where have all the flowers gone...?:)

Heh! In the above post, I actually committed a couple typos, so I edited and corrected the post, but I did remember to click Save when I was done!:)!

In my just completed lens tables, if it weren't for shortcuts and custom macros, I'd still be typing for another week!

Gotta love them there macros and shortcuts! Being the highly anal person that I am, I hate to see, much less use, "x" instead of "×" or hyphens instead of en or em dashes. Macros and shortcuts make using the proper characters as easy as using the wrong ones

Right, Rog, and especially the wrong ones (there I go, using the mouse/toolbar instead of a shortcut)...

And hey, we won't accuse you of being the "highly anal person that I am"!

And, heck, I still did a few typos in just this post! When you're not looking at the keyboard things can be, well, interesting!

Is there a shortcut for turning off/on "Old Person's Syndrome"?

in a previous life (& century) I used to be a telegraph tech, I figure if I can type at 50 baud using two fingers I needn't learn to touch type...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I signed up for Typing and Business English classes in high school (early 70's), that is where all the girls were that I wanted to meet :-)
But I also came away with touch typing speeds exceeding 40 wpm on the old electric typewriters. There were no "backspace" keys to correct errors either! No save and edit. What you type is what you get.

Heh!

Any more, what with the fact that texting has become pretty ubiquitous, the "old school" typing/keyboarding stuff could seem antique, although I'll say, I do prefer my keyboard over "fingering" a phone. I admit I'm a bit old-fashioned there, but back when I had been using cell phones for my work (being on-call 24/7) I didn't mind the convenience of having it on hand, although as needed: my land-line phone until just recently has continued to be my "main connection", and when texting was rolling out I just shrugged it off, and even today I don't bother with the texting!

Funny, something just happened, I was typing this message, but I'm still drinking my first cup of coffee, and at one point I saw on the screen that I had totally spaced out on where the "n" key was compared to the "m" key!

Well, at least a number of people have seen this thread, and someone may even have some insight as to why those dang Ctl-xx keyboard shortcuts don't work!...?

Have you ever considered that the ctrl=xx shortcuts may work fine, that it's your fingers that don't work so well?

My shortcuts always work for me.
