Question for Tamron 150-600 and 70-300 owners

Hi all,

Just wondering if you can help me out please. Do you consider the 150-600mm image quality as good as the 70-300mm vc lens, albeit twice the focal length?

The reason I ask is that I have had the 70-300mm for a long time now and consider it to have excellent image quality ( for me anyway ). I also have the Sigma 150-500mm which is ok but doesnt come close to the 70-300 at ranges where they overlap.

I mainly shoot birds and also have the 400mm 5.6 but need something with more range at times hence the Sigma and the interest in the new Tamron .

My copy of the 70-300mm even gives the 400 a run for its money (IQ wise not AF) so was wondering if the bigger Tamron is comparable?

Are you running a crop or a full frame?

I am interested in how well it does with the pixel density of a 18-20 mp crop camera. That is alot of pixels to cram together in a 600mm (x1.6) lens.

Currently using a 7D. I have been waiting for the apparent focusing problems to be sorted out by Tamron before taking the plunge but am curious if I can expect similar IQ as the 70-300mm...but bigger !

This is a big forum so chanses to find someone here with that combo are good.
In the meantime I can reply with a slight variant answer.
For years I'm used to the 300F4 and I found it to be one of my best lenses so I use it alot.
Since the 150-600 came out I was the first to acquire one in my hometown.
I use the Tammy with a 600D, a 5DII and 5DIII and until now only with the 5DIII there were some AF mishaps at AI-Servo.
I'm blown away by the IQ (mostly wideopen) in that matter that I'm actually considdering in selling the 300F4.
Too bad for the loss of 1,5 stop but for me Tamron succeeded in making a 600mm handholdable and affordable with a quality certainly not to be ashamed of.

I asked more or less the same thing some time ago. I got some unrelated replies and I guess no one had both or for whatever reason didn't want to post (I specifically asked if someone can post the same frame from the 70-300mm at 300mm f/5.6 and the 150-600mm at 600mm f/6.3).
Maybe there is someone with both lenses who can do that now.

I have the 70-300mm and it is good. Excellent for its price. I plan on getting the 150-600mm when it's more easily available so I can try it first. Then I could even answer your question, but who knows when that will happen...

Are we talking about the 70-300L or the 70-300 non-L? I'm guessing the non-L, as the poor AF is mentioned.

At 200-300mm, my 70-300 non-L is decidedly disappointing in full-frame corners even stopped down to f/8, and even on a crop-frame was certainly never stunning, especially wide open. I might have got a particularly bad copy, but it seems to behave similarly to how it appears on the test charts on the-digital-picture.

I'm still waiting for my 150-600mm to arrive, but I'm expecting very noticeable improvements over the 70-300mm at 300mm on a full-frame camera, based on reviews. Here's the TDP comparison between the 70-300mm at 300mm, f/8, vs the Tamron 150-600mm at 300mm, f/5.6:

The OP is talking about the Tamron 70-300vc lens.

For what it's worth, it even looks a little sharper at 600mm wide open on the digital picture.

One of the reasons that I wanted to see this comparison from someone is that the Tamron 70-300mm at 300mm f/5.6 is definitely NOT what TDP shows it to be! I've posted identical comparisons of this lens at 200mm and 300mm f/5.6 to show that.

Thankyou all for the replies. Snoop , Jbrackjr is correct I have the Tamron 70-300mm. I stop it down to f8 and it is nice and sharp, an absolute bargain for the $340 or so I paid for it. Just put my Sigma up for sale and am going to order the 150-600mm. Almost everybody has said that it kills the Sigma so I will put my faith in my fellow man and take the plunge . I just hope its not gonna take months to arrive on back order .

Those of you who have already received the Tammie 150-600; what type of lens case have you been able to find to fit this big boy? I would like to find a lightly padded drawstring bag when I receive mine. Any ideas?

Answering myself here just in case anyone needs to know. I purchased the Lowepro 13X32 cm case. It's huge but it is just about right for this huge lens. For me, hand held, the lens is very heavy, but the photo image quality so far looks good. Just took a few shots to check autofocus and to be sure it works. So far, so good.

Thanx for the heads up Willow, i havent even looked at bags / cases yet. I just bit the bullet and purchased a new build lens(27 may) from hong kong off ebay last night as al local dealers here in Aus are telling me they have long waiting lists and no idea when they will get more in, hopefully July but not confident in numbers.
I payed more but i am very impatient so went ahead with the purchase. Plus my wife just got a very good payrise so i celebrated by buying it, she doesnt need to know . The lens apparently has the corrected firmware as standard. Just gotta wait for it to arrive next week now. I wonder if it will fit into the Sigma 150_500mm carry bag?
