Long story short, car broken into while in DC. Camera bag snatched so lost everything but the 7d and 50 1.8 which I had on me. Insurance paid me 2500 to replace the goods, but I'm only spending 1500 replacing camera equipment, what better time to get that root canal ?

What I had

Canon 10-22
24-105
Kenko teleconverter
Tamron 90mm macro

There was some others odds and ends, but I'm just concerned with replacing lens.

With my budget, what lens is suggested. Used and third party are fine.

The 24-105 is available cheap these days so replacing it will be cheaper than before. So you ought to be able to get close to replacing your entire kit in the budget you laid out, especially if you save on the tokina over the canon ultrawide.

I know I can replace both the 24-105 and tokina with new copies and have some left over, just wondered about other options for the medium telephoto vs the 24-105. I plan on staying crop if that makes a difference. Would like something low light capable so wide aperture and/or image stabilization is important.

On a crop I would prefer the 17-55 range as its more versatile, but if you like the 24-105 range then its hard to beat that lens for the money.

You might consider the 18-135 STM over the 24-105. The 24-105 is better for the range it covers, no question, however the 18-135 has considerable additional range on each end (~0.3X on each end). It's also significantly less than the 24-105, running around 300$ for a NIB kit breakout.

I was conservative in these that they were wide open, except for the last where I stopped the 24-105L down to match the 18-135. Unfortunately there wasn't an image at 105, so I chose 85 as it was much closer than the other option of 135. Obviously it will preform worse at 18 & 135 than in the mid lengths, but there's no capability of the 24-105 to compare it.

Compared 24:

And at 85 & 105:

The reason I'm suggesting this is it would leave you another 300$ in your budget to spend on other lenses. It really comes down to your shooting style though. If the 24-105 is on your camera 99% of the time and you don't wish it was wider or longer, then spending the extra on the 24-105 makes a lot of sense.

What a pity. The thief sure didnt knew what to begin with those lenses and trashed it or selled it for little money...

However, i would sell the 7D and get a 6D with either the 85L and 24mm IS or a 24-70 2.8 if you like zoom more. You could get a 70-200 and a 24mm IS along if you want to have more reach than 85/70mm.

Options:
6D, 24 IS, 50 1.8 which you already own and 85L
6D, 24-70 2.8
6D, 24 IS, 50 1.8 and 70-200 2.8

It is the perfect opportunity to go fullframe so you would get more satisfaction than before, making the theft less of a pity, more of a good thing

Good luck!

Not everyone wants or needs a FF body... ;) and with a budget of $1500, even adding $700 from a sale of the 7D, it would be difficult to put together a good complete system. Glass before body, so this is a good situation to get good glass for the 7D.

Cmon everyone wants FF goodness :-P
If not then they just dont know it yet

But seriously, with 2200$ you can get a 6D refurb or in a cashback promotion, instant mail in rebate or whatever and still have 1000$ for something. A 24 IS and a 85 1.8 maybe?

Not if they need reach, or want more AF points with better AF performance with more frame coverage, or they need FPS, or need less expensive glass that still gets the job done... ;)

Since the topic is in Lenses, and the OP asks about replacement lenses for the 7D, let's try to keep it on track and not veer off into completely reinventing the TS's equipment line-up. :)

You are not getting a 6D refurb or cashback for $1200, at most you would have left would be $800 tops for glass. Again, unless the TS comes back and says "sure, I think I am in the mood to sell my 7D and start fresh", it seems pretty certain they want new glass for the 7D to replace what was stolen.

This highlights the inherent danger in keeping everything in one bag.
I had the same experience with a bag full of boating stuff, including a VHF radio.
The thief clearly went through everything in the car, but only took the boat bag and contents.

Now I've got all my camera gear in one bag. When I'm out shooting, I take a body, a lens or two, and leave the rest locked in the car. Did I learn nothing from my previous experience?

Going from my apartment to the car with all my stuff in one trip is so convenient. And having everything so neatly organized tickles my obsessive/compulsive disorder. But I know someone grabbing my camera bag from my car or my apartment would be a great loss.

Oh, life is full of such worries.

Chiming in here. Of course just about everyone wants FF, but most don't have budgets for it. I've looked at the 6d and love the low light capabilities it offers but don't know if I want to sacrifice the AF system of the 7d even though I use center point most of the time. I do on occasion need the FPS of the 7d also, but not sure if that would be a dealbreaker or not. I'd love to have a 5d III, but that's not going to happen until my grand plan of winning the lottery rolls in. I also love the robustness of the build of the 7D, I've not yet held or 6D so I can't comment on it.

I could probably get around 700 bucks on ebay for the 7d, but I'd need to invest 30 bucks for a charger ( that was in the bag ), I also have a OEM grip and two batteries for it. After all is said and done and ebay/ paypal suck out their fees, I'm probably looking around 725 on top of the 1500 I'm allotting..... that would put me right around a 6d 24-105 combo new from Best Buy.

You people are evil.

Heya,

Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC
Rokinon 14mm F2.8

Or

Canon EF 35mm F2 IS
Canon EF 85mm F1.8
Tokina 11-16 F2.8 II

Really it depends on what you shoot and if you value convenience, over prime qualities.

Very best,

Theives need to make a living too. And who is going to pay for their children to attend an exclusive school?

I'd buy a 1Dx so the next thief makes some serious money at the pawn shop.
