In Bridge the photos show up right away but it's waiting for the "thumbnail extractions" to complete that takes so long for me and the files are slow to view till that's done. I thought that was normal for Bridge but maybe I do have some issues ?

Are you sure you aren't referring to "Preview extractions"?

In other words, thumbnails show up quite quickly, but then "behind the scenes" larger previews are being rendered for all the files in the folder, sure, it takes a bit of time but I've never seen it as interrupting my workflow. The "thumbnails" are there at a glance, and if I open a Raw file in Camera Raw it does so fairly quickly even while the previews are in the process of being rendered...

All that being said I don't have one of the newer super-megapixel cameras, I'm sure things do slow down a bit with the huge files!

At any rate, even if Bridge takes a "bit" to render and use the larger previews, I don't see it worth the time and effort to open/use another app then switch over (except I use Lightroom, not Bridge)!

It's not preview extraction, it's to generate a new JPEG from the RAW data. Preview extraction is pretty quick, if that's what you tell it to do.

My workflow mentions a culling tool called Fast Picture Viewer that's MUCH faster than bridge for culling.

I cull with FastImageViewer (external link) because I love its speed. I can quickly compare 5-8 nearly identical images by scrolling my mouse wheel. Sometimes I will hold the right-click button to make the images 50% to make it easier to check for blinkers.

Once all of the culling is done, I import into Lightroom where I rate (1-3) and then ultimately flag my final keepers.

The main issue with culling RAW files depends on what you want to base the cull on; the in camera JPEG conversion or your RAW converters default conversion. If you need to use the second option then you will have to wait for those images to be rendered, you have no other option. If you are shooting ETTR with the histogram all the way to the right say, the in camera JPEG conversion may not be of much use to you for culling. This is when waiting for Bridge/LR to render images is your only real option. Pretty much all of the fast viewers are just pulling the embedded JPEG preview from the file and as such are limited by the camera conversion. I know that there is a new RAW viewer from the devlopers of RAW Digger that looks interesting, but I have not tried it yet.
