So my current workflow is like this.

I shoot, i come home, i download cards.

I download the memory card to STORAGE1.
YEARMONTHDATE_event

I then copy that folder manually to 2 backup drives BACKUP1 & BACKUP2.

I then work out of Lightroom importing the images from STORAGE1.
I don't delete any files from this folder. I just don't import the garbage.

What I'd like to know is, how can I setup the following.
Instead of manually copying the folder to BACKUP1 and BACKUP2, can I use windows 7 to automatically create the folders when I create them on STORAGE1?

IE can I do everything 1 time in STORAGE1 and then cull photos for deletion and have them automatically deleted from the 2 backup folders?

Can I do this within Windows7 or do I need an external file managing application?

Ideally I'd like to do it this way so that BACKUP1/2 mirror STORAGE1 w/o being a RAID configuration and happen automatically for space saving.

I don't believe Win7 can do this on its own. I've used a program called Second Copy to copy files around. It can be run manually, on a schedule, or in real time where you give it a folder(s) to monitor and it will automatically mirror any changes to another folder.

Bear in mind, though, that any automatic mirroring system will also mirror unintentional changes and/or deletes. I hope you keep one of your backups disconnected most of the time as a precaution. Second Copy does have the option of creating an "archive" folder where it sticks previous versions of files and deleted files. That helps, but it wouldn't protect you against something like Cryptolocker unless the drive is disconnected.

Windows has a backup ability that runs on a schedule; so it wouldn't do it as soon as you had copied them over. There are also quite a few back-up programs, some of which I expect can monitor a folder/drive and automatically sync it. Microsoft's Synctoy should be able to do what you want

However is isn't perfect. Read the last paragraph of the Features section of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SyncToy (external link) for a warning.

So, I don't back up until after a number of shoots...I Import into Lightroom from my memory card so the original Raw files are in my library, do short-term processing, then at some point use LR to move them into an external "Library" drive, and do backups.

So yeah, I don't have real robust backup strategy...

One thing you can consider it that with the Lightroom Import funtcion you can in fact have LR create a backup of your Raw files, although I believe there are limits, check it out!
