I have a 400m file that I need to convert to .jpg for the printer. I have been using the image processor script for conversion. The problem is that this conversion includes sharpening and it's creating some banding in the final image. I want to control sharpening after the conversion. Anyone know a different way to convert a large tiff to .jpg in CS6?

I don't have CS6 and don't know what preferences/features you can set for the Image Processor. If it was me and I wanted to "fine-tune" something, I'd create an Action that, say, applies sharpening and will "pause" so that I could adjust the details. So, this could be invoked from the Image Processor and then "tweaked" for each image as desired.

Otherwise, like I mentioned, check out the settings/preferences for the Image Processor for batches of Photos...yes, some types of sharpening work best for some things, not for others, take some time, maybe someone will have more specific advice!

Save as .jpg is size limited. I will try again. I will see if I can find the script.

Well, converting to a jpeg uses different processes, it's all up to you and how you set it up in the software. Like I said earlier, if you do want to use Image Processor for its automation, then yeah it can be nice, especially when dealing with batches of files, but if you are having issues, well, play with those IP settings, but then it's still a pretty straightforward process to open the tiff in Photoshop, do whatever processing/sharpening/color space/image size/dimensions for the print, then you can Save As a jpeg. If you set the Quality setting to a reasonably high level, you can avoid messyCompression "artifacts" (getting larger files but a better quality for a larger print).

How is the Image Processor adding sharpening? Are you running an action to sharpen in the Image Processor Preferences (box4)? If so, why not simply uncheck that box? Like others, not sure why you'd run the Image Processor for one image.

How is size limited in "save as"? For a test I pumped up a tiff file to 660MB and it worked just fine. Why not flatten the tiff and then "save as" jpeg?

Something just doesn't sound right.

I think image processor is a red herring. You've probably oversharpened.

I only have CS2, but I convert TIFF's to Jpegs to upload onto the web or for email often. As far as I can see it does not sharpen the image.

I open the image in CS2, then resave as a Jpeg, and nothing odd happens, it simply closes as a Jpeg.

So I have no idea what CS6 does that is different. Like you, I want to be in control, not the software!
